Web-Based Monitoring and Control of a Drip Irrigated Farm System

Using the IoT; Internet-of-Things Infrastructure

RATIONALE:
The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) reports that the Philippines has three existing
irrigation systems in the Philippines, naming the National Irrigation System (NIS), Communal
Irrigation System (CIS) and Private Irrigation System (PIS). The Philippines has about 10.3
million ha agricultural lands. Out of this, around 3.1 million ha are considered irrigable, with
up to 3 percent slope, and primarily devoted to rice and corn. A study by the World Bank,
however, identified more than 6.1 M ha as irrigable, including areas that are relatively more
difficult to irrigate and up to 8 percent slope.
As of December 2015, about 1.731 million ha or 57.33 percent of the 3.1 million ha have been
developed for irrigation. Of the total area under irrigation, about 754,665 ha are under NIS;
615,797 ha under CIS that are farmer-managed; and 187,766 ha under privately owned
systems that are constructed through private initiatives.
The National Irrigation Administration on its inventory on Irrigated areas in Region 2 dated
December 2016, reports that it has 457, 246 Ha irrigable areas but it only covered 293, 004
Ha suggesting that only 64% of the total irrigable areas has been covered. In summary 164,
242 Ha about 36% of the total irrigable areas need the service of NIA for irrigation.
In the Philippines especially in Cagayan Valley, not so much is known as Smart Irrigation
System wherein advance technologies were put in place as integration to farm practices, as a
result farmers continue to practice traditional methods in irrigating crops. David (2004)
estimated that Philippine rice fields use 15,000 to 30,000 cubic meter (m3) of water per ha,
while other countries use only 7,500 m3. He estimated that the countrys water use efficiency
was only 40%. It is due to the common farming and irrigation method we use today unlike
other countries that use smart farming methods. To address this dilemma new methods in
irrigating must be introduced that integrates the use of advanced technologies like digital or
cyber systems in farming.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The proposed project will develop a farm system that focuses on irrigating plants. In this
system a web-application and electronic devices will be used to control and monitor physical
quantities or parameters that contributes or factors to irrigating plants. It will use a GUI-
Graphical User Interface, a user friendly approach in utilizing real time data and modifications
of set parameters of the system. Most operations and activities needed will be done through
an internet connection readily available in the farm site and the user.

PROJECT GOAL
The project aims to introduce a technology that mitigates the increasing need of water
sufficiency on irrigating plants which is a contributory key on an increased yield of
commodity crops in the region. Specifically, to find prime commodity crops in the region to
which the introduced system suitable. It is also in support to the NHERA research agenda in
climate change mitigation through an effective and efficient means of using water.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To develop a fully functional system that mitigates waste water as compared to traditional
method of irrigation
To establish a farm site for experimental purposes using the developed project.
To identify commodity crops to which the new system deems suitable.
To introduce the project to farmers for possible adoption.
