Solutions For Marine Applications
GOLDEN RULE
Vibrations and Noise should
be tackled at its source
because:
Energie in = Energie out
Noise Levels: Structure >>> Airborne
Airborne Cabin Noise Levels
Propagated by Structure Borne Noise Sources

Structure-born-noise
Noise caused by radiation of transmitted vibration

Air-born-noise
Noise being transmitted by air, direct from the machinery

Why Anti-Vibation Mountings?

To reduce or eliminate Strucure-Born Noise

To reduce the energy level on flexible mounted machinery
(fatigue prevention)
To create freedom of movement / a spring system
(example: required for a vibrating screen)

VCE techniek
Vibration Engineering

Marine Applications

Always use A.V.M.s with a proper rebound control in order

to make the application fail-safe
Propulsion engines always require additional attention,
because of the flexible coupling / propellor-thrust / gearbox-
reduction / engine type (call us for selection assistance)
Make sure the stiffness of the flexible coupling / expansion
bellows is inferior to the primary mounting system

VCE techniek
Rubber to metal bonded mountings
Advantages of natural rubber compounds/mixes:
Good isolation (also against high frequencies)
Low creep (compression set)
Good bonding properties
Very good damping properties
Low aging
Relative low price
Disadvantages of natural rubber:
Not oil-resistant, so additional ingredients are necessary to give some
protection
Maximum allowable temperature 70 - 80 C

VCE techniek
Synthetic Rubber Mixes
Advantages of synthetic rubber mixes:
Mostly oil-resistant
High temperatures till 200 C (themsyl)
High damping mixes available

Disadvantages of synthetic rubber mixes:

Aging (Neoprene)
Relative expansive
Bonding not always sufficient

VCE techniek
Steel Springs

Advantages of steel springs:

Resistant against high temperature
Oil-resistant / resistant against most chemicals
Low spring-rate in combination with compact dimensions

Disadvantages of steel spings:

No acoustic isolation
No damping without additional absorber
Corrosion creates reduction of spring rate

Vibration Engineering

Single or Two-Mass System?

Advantages of Two-Mass System:
Larger Mass against free forces and moments
Double mounting system = more isolating material
Inertia plate reduces (vertical) air-born noise

Choice depends on:

Vibration / Noise regulations
Physical properties of suporting structure
H. Power of the machinery

Pegasus Steerable Nozzle-Rudder
Non-Metallic Nozzles offer many advantages to displacement
vessels:
Greatly reduced Noise and Vibrations
Greatly increased maneuverability especially at low speed
Protection of the propeller
Smaller propeller diameter required
Higher propeller efficiency
50% less thrust on the thrust bearing and machinery mountings
Increased fuel efficiency
BEFORE- Typical Displacement Driveline
Before: Typical Inland waterway cargo vessel with conventional propeller
and rudder. Standard flax packed stuffing box allows constant dripping to
low engine bilge. CV Joint thrust block is fitted with large shaft angle.

Result is low lifespan on drive line components and poor performance

underway. Dripping shaft seal presents an oil discharge problem and low
efficiency increases fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Poor
maneuverability results in difficulty holding course, crew fatigue and
increased likelihood of collision.
AFTER Pegasus Steerable Nozzle
After: Improved driveline design using Poseidon Propulsion components:
Engine fixed lower on highly resilient VCEtechniek mounts.

Poseidon Drive - Thrust Block / Highly Flexible Coupling eliminates all

metal/metal driveline contact. 12,000 hour lifespan.

Pegasus Steerable Nozzle System - Reduced shaft angle, reduced draft,

improved flow, improved performance
