DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Back by popular demand, the Distinguished Lecture Series will again
be featured at ASCE 2017 New Orleans! One notable author will
take the stage and present an interesting session to be followed by a
book signing. Plan to attend this session that was standing room only

CIVIL ENGINEERING MAGAZINE PRESENTS
RESTORING THE CAPITOL DOME
While most construction projects serve only as local points of interest, some
are conducted on a national stage. The restoration of the U.S. Capitols
dome was one such project. The extent of the scaffolding and the progress
of the work were fully visible on various national news programs from the
summer of 2014 until the fall of 2016. Very little of the work performed
during the restoration could be considered typical, and all of it needed to
be performed with limited effect on the occupancy and use of the spaces
below. Come hear how this never-before-attempted complete restoration of
the domes interior and exterior was accomplished.
ASCE PRESENTS OCEA
The ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA)
projects will be highlighted again this year, and the session will
include short presentations from three of the finalists and the winning
project, including the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, the Union
Station to Oak Cliff Dallas Streetcar project, and the winning project,
The Emergency & Carryover Water Storage Project. This promises to
be an enlightening session you wont want to miss.
LEADERSHIP IN TODAYS WORLD: FINDING YOUR PATH
This session will demonstrate real paths to leadership to inspire
leaders at every level. Attendees will hear about the paths and
leadership stories through a panel discussion of successful, prominent
leaders in the civil engineering profession. Learn what it takes to
become an ethical leader in todays world and what leadership
traits to develop to succeed. Speakers will also share their ideas on
mentoring and values in order to foster leadership in others.
A question and answer session with the panelists will follow the

years than in all previous years combined. U.S. Army Europe is
responsible for the safety of 100,000 U.S. personnel and $10.2
billion worth of assets across 51 countries with an extreme diversity
of threats. Protecting these lives and assets is a multidisciplinary and
tiered approach, but civil engineers play a crucial role in the stages
of deter and defend. Whether in Europe or in the U.S., civil
engineers incorporate antiterrorism (AT) considerations from the first
phases of planning through the final periods of construction in order
to create facilities that dissuade aggressors from targeting them, and

Structural Design Innovation at a Large Scale
Numerous design innovations were incorporated into the structural
engineering of the New Mercedes Benz Stadium, including a never-
been-done-before retractable roof, the first use of single skin ETFE in
the United States and supporting the largest scoreboard in sports.
The challenges of innovation in large-scale projects will be discussed,
especially in light of fast-track schedules, and the engineering
solutions to these challenges will be presented.

ASCE kicks off Tuesday morning by celebrating the success and
achievements of the Society as reported by ASCE Executive Director

to present ASCE Society awards and install your new Officers.
The meeting concludes with inaugural remarks from 2018 ASCE

INTERNATIONAL ATTENDEES
International attendees, please be sure to visit the Convention website

visa requirements and guidelines. Please file your paperwork at least
four (4) months in advance in order to be eligible for a refund prior
to the registration cutoff date. ASCE cannot refund registration fees
after the registration cutoff date due to an individuals inability to obtain
a visa.
Cancellations/Refunds
Cancellations must be sent in writing or via email. A refund
will be issued, minus a $100 processing fee, if the cancellation
