Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to enable students to begin to acquire proficiency in


American Sign Language through communicative and cultural approach to
language learning. Emphasis is placed on the development of receptive and
expressive signing skills covering basic ASL vocabulary and syntactic patterns
and the acquisition of the fundamentals of applied grammar. The class will focus
on dialogue and basic ASL structure.

The class will cover four domains of ASL: attending, signing, video viewing and
video signing (documentation) that will include academic use of the language. In
addition, the class will cover information on the history and structure of ASL with
some basic comparisons of English language and structure. The students also
will work on ASL presentation preparation and communicative competence.

To be able to identify and use ASL
To learn how to communicate basic needs and wants
To be able to participate in and contribute to activities and events
To show understanding of expressive America Sign Language on a variety of topics
To apply knowledge of American Sign Language and Deaf culture(s) to further
knowledge of other discipline.

Participation
Each student is expected to participate in dialogues/discussion/activities.
Participation grades will be given daily.

Homework Policy
Assignments are to be done on time. If they are one day late, the grade will be lowered
by 20%. Any later than one day will be assigned a zero.
This policy is flexible only when extenuating circumstances arise.

Grading Policy:
The final course grade is based on the number of points earned. The letter grade will
be given according to the following:

Weights will be given to the following categories:

Class work and class participation 30%

Projects/Quizzes 50%

Exam 10%
