Overview of GSM
Cellular Concept
Reuse of Frequency
Types of cells
GSM Architecture
GSM NW elements
GSM Areas
Group of cells.
The number of cells in a cluster must be determined so
that the cluster can be repeated continuously within the
covering area of an operator.
The typical clusters contain 4, 7, 12 or 21 cells.
The smaller the number of cells per cluster is, the bigger
the number of channels per cell will be. The capacity of
each cell will be therefore increased
However a balance must be found in order to avoid the
interference that could occur between neighboring
clusters when small size clusters are opted.
MACRO-CELL:

MICRO-CELL:
Antenna below the roofs
---> small coverage
Architecture of GSM NW
The band 890-915 MHz has been allocated for the uplink
direction (transmitting from the mobile station to the
base station).
The band 935-960 MHz has been allocated for the
downlink direction (transmitting from the base station to
the mobile station).

The goal of power control in WCDMA is to have the signals from all
of the User Equipments (UE) arrive at the base station with the
same power level.

CTOP-UP C Top-Up SIM is a special SIM given to Franchises/Retailers, using which they can
SIM recharge a subscriber's SIM without using any paper vouchers
When a subscriber recharges his prepaid SIM from a retailer's C TOP-UP SIM or Electronic through a
website, it is called electronic recharge or flexi recharge
Recharge
Commission is the money channel partner gets from telecom operator for making a
Commission sale. E.g. on RCV sale, Franchise gets 4.5% discount of which some part he will pass
on to retailer

In most case, a simple plug and play terminal, similar to a DSL modem,
provides connectivity. See Figure 3. For customers located several
kilometers from the WiMAX base station, a self-install outdoor antenna
may be required to improve transmission quality. To serve isolated
customers, a directive antenna pointing to the WiMAX base station may be
required. For customers requesting voice in addition to broadband
services, specific CPE will allow the connection of standard or VoIP
phones.
