1. A sample of saturated clay was placed in a container and weighed. The weight was 6N. The
clay in its container was placed in an oven dray for 24 hours at 105. The weight reduced to a
constant weight of 5N. The weight of the container is 1N. Determine the water content.
Solution:
Given:
Wwet + Wcontainer = 6N
Wdry + Wcontainer = 5N
Wcontainer = 1N
Gs = 2.7
Wwet = Wwet + Wcontainer Wcontainer = 6 1 = 5N.
Wdry = Wdry + Wcontainer Wcontainer = 5 1 = 4N.
%w = (Wwet Wdry)/Wdry 100%
= (5 4)/4 100%
%w = 25%

2. If a soil sample has a dry unit weight of 19.5 KN/m3, moisture content of 8% and a specific
gravity of solids particles is 2.67 calculate the void ratio.
Solution:
Given:
dry = 19.5KN/m3
%w = 8%
Gs=2.67
dry = (Gs w)/(1 + e)
19.5 = (2.67 9.81)/(1 + e)
e = 0.343

3. A soil sample has avoid ratio of 0.72, moisture content = 12% and G s = 2.72 determine the dry
unit weight and moist unit weight (kN/m 3).
Solution:
Given:
e = 0.72
%w = 12%
Gs=2.72
dry = (Gs w)/(1 + e)
= (2.72 9.81)/(1 + 0.72)
dry = 15.51 kN/m3

moist = dry(1 + %w)

= 15.51 (1 + 0.12)
moist = 17.374 kN/m3
4. An undisturbed sample of clayey soil is found to have a wet weight of 285 N, a dry weight of
250 N, and a total volume of 14x103 cm3 if the specific gravity of soil solids is 2.70, determine
the water content.
Solution
Given:
Wwet = 285N
Wdry = 250N
VT =14x103 cm3
Gs = 2.7
%w = [(WwetWdry)/Wdry] 100%
= [(285250)/250] 100%
%w = 14%

5. The total volume of a soil specimen is 80,000 mm 3 and it weighs 150 grams. The dry weight of
the specimen is 130 grams and the density of the soil solids is 2680 kg/m 3.Find the following:
a) The water content
b) Void Ratio
c) Porosity
Solution
Given:
VT = 80,000 mm3
Mmoist = 150 g
Mdry = 130 g
s = 2680 kg/m3
a) %w = [(MmoistMdry)/Mdry] 100%
= [(150130)/130] 100%
%w = 15.38%

b) Gs = s/water = 2680/1000 = 2.68

VT = 80,000 mm3= 80,000 109 = 80 106 m3
dry = Mdry/VT = (130103)/(80106) = 1625 kg/m3
dry = (Gs w)/(1 + e)
1625 = (2.68 1000)/(1 + e)
e = 0.649
c) n = e/(1 + e)
= 0.649/(1 + 0.649)
n = 0.393
6.)

The moisture content of a saturated clay is 160.0 %. The specific gravity of the soil solids Gs
is 2.40. What are the wet and dry densities of the saturated clay?

solution :

given:
m = 160.0% or 1.60, Gs = 2.40, Sr=1.0 (saturated clay)

Wet Density:
e = (mGs/Sr) = 1.6 2.4/1 = 3.84
sat = (Gs+Sre)/(1+e)w
=(2.4 + 1.6 2.4)/(1+3.84) 1000 = 1289 kg/m3

Dry Density:
d = Gs/(1+e)w
=2.4/(1+3.84) 1000 = 496 kg/m3

7.

A saturated sample of clay has a volume of 0.224x10 -4 m3 and weighs 0.0367 kg. After oven
drying, the volume is 0.140x10-4 m3. The weight of dry soil is 0.0232 kg. For the soil in its natural
state, find:
a. Water content m, %
b. Specific gravity, Gs
c. Void ratio e
d. Saturated density sat
e. Dry density dry

Solution:

VT: 0.224x10-4 m3 ; MT : 0.0367 kg; after drying, VVT: 0.140x10-4 m ; Ms:0.0232 kg.

A.) m = Mw/Ms = (0.0367 - 0.0232)/0.0232 = 0.5818 or 58.18%

E.) d = 0.0232/0.224x10-4 = 1036 kg/m3

D.) sat = 0.0367/0.224x10-4 = 1638 kg/m3

E.) sat = (Gs+e)/(1+e) w = Gs/(1+e) w + e/(1+e) w =d + e/(1+e)w

then, 1638 = 1036 + n1000
n = (1638-1036)/1000) = 0.602
e = n/(1-n)=0.602/(1-0.602)= 1.513

B.) Gs=Sre/m = 11.513/0.5818 = 2.60

8.

A soil has a bulk density of 1810 kg/m 3. The moisture content was found to be 16.1 %. Assume
Gs=2.7, find:
a. Void ratio e
b. Dry density d
c. Degree of saturation Sr, %

Solution :

A.) b : 1810 kg/m3; m = 16.1%; Gs = 2.7

void ratio,e : b =(Gs + mGs)/(1+e)w
1810=(2.7+0.161?2.7)/(1+e)w
then, e = 0.731

B.) d = b/(1+m) = 1810/(1+0.161) = 1559 kg/m3

C.)Degree of saturation Sr = mGs/e = 0.1612.7/0.731 = 0.59427 = 59.47%

9.

A soil specimen with a volume of 0.60x10-4m3 weighs 0.105 kg. Its dry weight is
0.0802 kg, and Gs is 2.65. Compute
a. Water content m, %
b. Void ratio e and porosity n
c. Degree of saturation Sr, %
(ans:30.92%,0.982,49.55%,83.44%)

Solution :

a.) VT=60x10-4m3; MT : 0.105 kg; Ms : 0.0802 kg; Gs = 2.65

Water Content m = Mw/Ms = (MT - Ms)/Ms = (0.105 - 0.0802)/0.0802 = 0.3092
= 30.92%

b.) Void ratio e :

d = Ms/VT = 0.0802/0.60x10-4 = 1336.7 kg/m3
d = Gs/(1+e) ?w
then 1336.7 = 2.65/(1+e) ?1000
1+e = 1.982
thus, e = 0.982
and, n = e/(1+e) = 0.4955 = 49.55%

c.) Degree of saturation Sr : mGs/e = 0.3092 ?2.65/0.982 = 0.8344 = 83.44%

10.

The dry density of a compacted sand is 1820 kg/m 3 and density of the solids (Gs x w) is 2670
kg/m3. What is the water content of the material when saturated?

Solution :

known : d : 1Suggested Solution :

/m3
assume Total volume is 1m3
Ms = 1820 kg; Vs = 1820 / 2670 = 0.68 m3
Vv = 1-0.68 = 0.32 m3
If filled with water (Sr=1) then Mw = 0.32 1000 = 320 kg;
m = 320/1820 = 0,1758
sat = (1820+320)/1 = 2140 kg/m3
