1. SCOPE

1.1. This standard specification covers the general requirements for the design of B.O.P. piping
system in BIO FUEL ETHANOL PLANT IN NORTHERN REGION PROJECT.
1.2. The intent of this standard is not to supersede ASME piping code, but only to supplement
it as requested.

2. GENERAL

2.1. Applicable Code and Standards for design


Codes and Standards to be applied the latest edition as of September, 2009.
(1) Design code;
ASME B31.3: PROCESS PIPING
ASME B31.1: POWER PIPING
(2) Material specification;
ASTM or JIS equivalent.
Individual material shall be shown in Piping Material Specification. When JIS is
applied, the equivalent ASTM shall be specified.
(3) Dimensions:
(a) Pipe: ASME or API standards
(b) Fitting: ASME standards
(c) Flange: ASME B16.5 (24 & under) and ASME B16.47 SERIES B (26
and over)
(d) Valves: ASME, API, BS or MSS
(4) Unit of measurement:

2.2. Design Philosophy
The plant layout, equipment layout and relevant piping arrangement should be performed
in consideration of followings:
(1) Construction and maintenance requirements
Sufficient space should be provided for the efficient/effective use of mobile
equipment for the construction and maintenance work of plant.
(2) Operation requirements
Easy access for daily operation/maintenance of various instruments, valves etc.
should be assured to enable proper and safe plant operation.

(3) Safety requirements


The roads, access ways and fire-fighting equipment should be arranged in
consideration of space requirement for safety, and advantage to taking prompt
action in case of emergency. High risk facilities or equipment handling toxic or
hazardous fluid should be segregated to minimize involvement of adjacent facilities
in an emergency, and prevent further equipment failures.
(4) Economical requirements
Equipment, piping, and cable should be laid out/arranged to minimize the total
length of pipes and cables, especially large-size, low-allow steel, stainless steel
pipes, and large-size electrical cables.

3. PIPING MATERIAL

3.1. Pipe
The pipe wall thickness shall be calculated in accordance with ASME B31.3 using the
following basic.
Carbon steel piping:
Size: DN15 to DN300 On the basis of P-T rating indicated on ASME B16.5
Size: DN350 and larger On the basis of design condition
Stainless steel piping:
Size: DN15 to DN150 On the basis of P-T rating indicated on ASME B16.5
Size: DN200 and larger On the basis of design condition
3.2. Fitting
(1) Socket welded joint should be limited to DN40 and less. Socket welding and its
preparation shall confirm to ASME B16.5 for flanges and ASME B16.11 for other
components.
(2) Threaded joints may generally be used for water and air service in DN80 and less.
Threading and its preparation shall confirm to ASME B1.20.1.
(3) Butt-welded joints are preferred. End preparation shall confirm to ASME B16.25
Fig. 2(a) or Fig. 3(a).
(4) Cold bend piping will apply to carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe of DN15
through DN40.

3.3. Valve
(1) Valve type shall be in accordance with specified in P&ID.
(2) Gear operators shall be furnished for valve the following sizes:

CL.300 350 & Larger - 150 & Larger 150 & Larger

4. PIPING ARRAGEMENT GENERAL

4.1. Sizing
(1) Nominal size 32, 58, 65, 90, 125, 178, 230 and 550 DN shall be not used, and
equipment or instrument connections of these size shall be change to permissible
sized immediately adjacent to equipment or instrument.
(2) The minimum size of piping components should be DN15. (Except for steam trace
tracer piping)
(3) Minimum size on pipe-rack or sleeper to be DN40.
4.2. Distances between Pipes
(1) For non-insulated piping, a minimum clearance of 25 mm shall be provided
between the outside diameter of pipe flanges and adjacent pipes or a minimum
clearance of 25 mm shall be provided between the outside surfaces of pipes. For
insulated piping, the insulation thickness shall be taken into consideration.
(2) The minimum clearance between pipes which are subject to expansion and
contraction should be determined as required.
(3) The minimum clearance between a valve hand-wheel and another hand-wheel shall
be 100 mm.
4.3. Typical Piping (Sampling, Drain and Vent)
4.3.1. Sampling piping should be arranged as per the following requirements.
(1) All sampling points should be located at grade or at a platform.
(2) Sampling piping should be as short as possible.
(3) Where a sample connection connects to a horizontal run pipe, the tie-in should be
made at the side of the run pipe for liquid service, and at the top of the run pipe for
gas and vapor.
4.3.2. Drains and Vents other than indicated on P&ID shall be provided as per the following
requirements:
(1) Drains shall be provided at low points of all piping. Vents for hydrostatic shall be
provided at high points of DN50 and larger piping, and at vent pocket of all pump
suction piping if any.
(2) Vent shall be with valve for DN350 and larger liquid piping and pump suction piping.

(3) Drains and Vents shall generally be in accordance with the followings:
Drains
(a) All piping: DN20 gate valve with threaded plug
Vents
(a) Valved vent: DN20 gate valve with threaded plug
(b) Required for hydrostatic testing purpose: DN20 threaded plug
(When run pipe size is DN15, the size of drain or vent valves shall be DN15.)

5. ACCESS REQUIREMENT

5.1. Access to Operational Valves


(1) Valves shall generally be able to operate at grade or on a platform.
(2) In the case of horizontal stems, the recommended height of the valve center is 1.2
meter from the grade or operating floor. In case of the recommendation difficulty,
the position of the center valve shall be chosen following Piping Standard drawing
(D-00-1360-001 SHT6).
(3) Where the height of DN80 and larger valve stems is higher than value indicated in
Piping Standard drawing (D-00-1360-001 SHT6) above from the grade or
operating floor, operating steps, etc to be studied in order to assure safe and
smooth operation/maintenance.
(4) Ladder access to valves shall be permitted (for DN50 and smaller valves).
5.2. Access to In-line Instruments (CV/SV included)
(1) CV/SV/Regulator and ESD valves should be accessed from grade or fixed platform.
(2) Differential pressure flow instrument and other flow instrument should basically be
accessed from grade, platform.
(3) Local indicator (inc. Pressure gauge) and Thermocouple/well should principally be
accessed from grade, platform.
5.3. Temporary Access
For the hot bolting and/or spectacle blinds, not required normal operation, shall be
accessed by temporary access equipment (i.e. temporary step or scaffolding).
5.4. Clearance
- Horizontal
Operational access: 0.75 m width minimum
Maintenance/Walkway access: 0.6 m width minimum
Truck access for maintenance and fire fighting: 3.5 m width minimum
- Vertical
Minimum vertical head clearance: 2.1 m
Minimum over main roadway clearance: 5.0 m
Minimum secondary roadway clearance: 4.5 m
Minimum height of pipe rack with truck access: 4.5 m
Minimum height of pipe rack without truck access: 2.5 m

6. UNDERGROUND PRESSURE PIPING

For underground buried steel piping, adequate corrosion protection shall be provided.

7. ABOVEGROUND PIPING

7.1. Piping around Equipment


7.1.1. Tower and Drum Piping
(1) Piping and supports
(a) Manholes and instruments on towers and drums should be located at the
maintenance side, while piping should be arranged at the pipe way side.
(b) Piping at the towers and drums should run parallel to and as close as feasible to
the towers and drums to facilitate support design.
(c) Piping and their supports should be arranged in consideration of the thermal
expansion of the tower and drum.
(2) Platforms
(a) Fixed platform shall be provided for:
Service openings such as manholes (except those not situated higher than 3
m). Platform shall generally be located 0.75 m from centerline of manholes.
Instrument and valves to which access will be required during operation.
(refer to 5.2)
(b) Minimum clearance between the first stage platform and ground level shall be a
minimum of 3.0 m.
(c) Platform shall be arranged so that the vertical distances between upper and
lower platforms do not exceed 9 m.
7.1.2. Piping for Rotating Machinery
(1) General
(a) Sufficient flexibility and adequate support shall be provided for piping which
serves rotating machines, to minimize stress applied on the nozzles of the machine,
which might influence the proper installation alignment or internal clearances of
the machine, or jeopardize the trouble-free operation of the machine.
(b) Connecting piping for rotating machines shall be arranged so that internal
elements and casing sections of the machine can be removed for maintenance
without interference with the connecting piping.
(2) Pump
(a) Pump suction piping shall be arranged to avoid the formation of vapor pockets.
Where a reducer is required at horizontal pump suction piping, an eccentric
reducer shall be installed with the flat side on top for any configuration of
suction piping. A drain shall be installed at the low point of the line.
(b) The location of valves and instruments should be selected for easy operation
and location close to pumps.
(c) Suction strainers should be positioned at locations where they are accessible for
cleaning.

(d) The suction and discharge piping must be supported independently to minimize
load transmitted to the pump casing. Type of strainers used in pump suction
piping shall be as follows:
DN50 and smaller size Y type
DN80 and larger size T type
(3) Compressor
Reciprocating compressor piping shall be arranged and supported so as to prevent
fatigue failure due to the effects of possible vibration and pressure pulsation.
7.1.3. Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Piping
(1) Piping should be arranged so as to allow removal of channel covers and tube
bundles and give easy access for bolting.
(2) Where practical, symmetrical piping is preferred for the inlet piping of heat
exchangers having multiple inlet nozzles.
(3) The configuration of piping connected to respective heat exchanger of the same
item arranged in parallel shall be symmetrical.
7.2. Tank Farm Piping
(1) Piping inside tank dikes should take the shortest possible route to the main pipe
way, with appropriate allowance for expansion and contraction.
(2) Piping shall be arranged to enable the absorption of nozzle displacement caused by
tank settlement, or piping displacement caused by nozzle rotation due to tank shell
deformation.
(3) Piping passing through dikes shall be adequately protected against external
corrosion, and shall be capable of absorbing any possible movement of piping due
to thermal expansion and contraction.
7.3. Pipe way piping
A pipe sleeper should be provided for the main pipe way of process units and B.O.P.
facilities.
If valve manifolds are located on pipe rack or sleeper, adequate access should be provided.
7.4. Utility piping
All branch piping from utility headers shall be taken from the top of the header to prevent
plugging, however, liquid service branch piping of DN50 and larger may be taken from
the bottom of the header.
7.5. Piping around Instruments
7.5.1. General
(1) Instruments should be so located that they will not be exposed to possible damage
during operation, inspection or maintenance of equipment.
(2) All measuring elements should be installed at locations where exact measurements
can be taken, free from disturbances due to access for operation and maintenance.
The positions of instruments should be selected so that their readings are visible
from ground level, platform, stairs, ladders, or steps.

7.5.2. Pressure Instrument


The piping for pressure instruments shall not be branched off from the bottom of the line.
7.5.3. Flow Instrument
(1) Orifices should be installed in horizontal pipes, as far as possible. When it is
impossible to find sufficient straight length in a horizontal piping, orifices may be
installed in a vertical piping with downward flow gas and vapor, and upward flow
for liquid.
(2) The orientation of taps for the orifices should be horizontal for steam and liquid
service, and upward for gas and vapor service. If such arrangement is impractical
due to local situation, the taps may be oriented within 45 degrees of vertical upward
for steam service and within 45 degrees of vertical downward for liquid service.
(3) The minimum straight length required for both upstream and downstream of the
orifices, shall be in accordance with instrument engineers information.
7.5.4. Temperature Instrument
(1) The location of thermo-wells should be arranged so as to maintain sufficient space
for insertion/removal temperature elements.
(2) Temperature instruments shall be located at least 10 times the pipe diameter
downstream from the mixing point of two different temperature streams.
7.5.5. Control Valve
(1) Control valves should be located to facilitate maintenance and manual operation
from an operating floor.
(2) Control valves should normally be installed in horizontal piping with the valve
stem vertically upward.
(3) Sufficient clearance should be provided above the diaphragm and below the bottom
of the body for maintenance.
7.5.6. Level Gauge and Level Instrument
(1) The LC and LG should be arranged to cover the full control and measuring range
from Low Liquid Level to High Liquid Level indicated on the equipment data
sheets.
(2) Preferably, stand pipe should be used. If the vessel is too small to install a stand
pipe, the LC and LG may be installed directly to the vessel respectively.
7.6. Relief System Piping
7.6.1. General
The design and installation of pressure-relieving systems shall be in accordance with
API RP 520 Sizing, Selection, and Installation of Pressure Relieving Devices in
Refineries
7.6.2. Closed System
(1) The outlet piping from the relief valve shall be self-draining into the header.
(2) The outlet piping from the relief valve shall be connected to the top part of the
header at a 45 degree angle to the flow direction, but a DN50 or smaller piping may
be connected at right angles to the flow direction.

7.6.3. Open System


In order to protect personnel from hazard and equipment from damage, discharges to
atmosphere shall be located at safe location, in accordance with the following requirements:
(1) Where pressure relief valve discharge to the atmosphere, the vent line shall
terminate at least 3.0 m above any service platform locate within a radius:
i. 15m for hydrocarbon or ethanol service.
ii. 7.5m for steam service and other.
However, where large volume or high-pressure releases are anticipated, they should
be reviewed for safety on a case by case basis.
(2) A 6mm weep hole shall be provided for drainage at a low point of the discharge
piping.

8. PIPE SUPPORT

Standard pipe support drawings and individual special pipe support shall basically be
prepared. It may be able to indicate support detail on isometric drawings or piping plan
drawings.

9. STRESS ANALYSIS

Analysis of piping systems shall be as directed by Specification of Piping Flexibility and


Stress Analysis S-00-1360-005.

10. THERMAL INSULATION

Piping shall be insulated in accordance with project specification.

11. PAINTING AND IDENTIFICATION

Piping systems shall be painted in accordance with project specification.

12. PIPING DRAWING

12.1. Drafting Method


Piping drawing shall be generated with following method respectively.
- Plan drawing 2D CAD
- Isometric drawing 2D CAD
- Plan and Partial Detail 2D CAD
(1) Process area (around equipment)
Plan and isometric drafting method should be applied.
(2) Tankage area and Pipe rack or Pipe sleeper
Plan and partial detail drafting method or plan and isometric drafting method
should be applied.
