BULK BLENDING & HANDLING PROCEDURE FOR LW CEMENT

MATERIALS
1. Lot numbers of bulk cement and all additives must be recorded on the blend
sheet.
2. This batch number must coincide with that used in laboratory testing.
3. Additives must be of the same lot or batch number as used in laboratory tests.
4. Any substandard or suspect material (chunks, lumps, rocks, wet) is not to be
used.

PREPARATION
1. Air compressor and/or vacuum system must be checked for proper
operation and drained of any moisture.
2. Lot numbers of bulk cement and all additives to be used must be
recorded.

BLENDING & LOADING

1. Maximum of three- complete pneumatic bulk plant transfers are required for
lightweight cement blends. It is imperative to minimize the amount of transfers
with LW-6 blends, as the lightweight particles segregate easily from the
heavier cement.
2. Percolating air through the blend WILL NOT be accepted as a replacement
method.
3. LW-6 Blend

These steps should be repeated until the required quantities have been cut and
blended.

Detailed blending procedure shall be fine tune based on actual of storage silo
available.

Precautions that should be taken to minimize the loss of LW-6 through the vent lines,
and to ensure a homogeneous blend, including:
Transfer air pressures should be regulated to between 20 psi while
loading the supply boat.
Transfer from the boat to the rig should be achieved with 25- 30 psi air
pressure (do not fluff the blend on the supply boat prior to transfer).
The rig silo should be pressurized to 20 psi from above and then raised
to 25 psi through the fluffing system (20 psi air pressure must

maintained during the job). Transfer to the surge tank should be

achieved with minimal purge air.
Start the job with the Cement Unit surge tank half full - keep it at this
level throughout the job.

By following these steps, minimizing the number of times the blend is

transferred and reducing the use of purge line air during transfers, the LW-6
wastage will be insignificant.

SAMPLING

1. Three samples (top-middle-bottom position) MUST be taken while

transferring from the BJ-PVD JV Silo to Supply boat.
2. An automatic or manual sampling valve may be used as follows:
a) A pneumatic in- line sampler operated through the complete
transfer.
b) A manual one or two inch valve sampler located on the discharge line
and opened intermittently during the entire transfer.
c) Total sample quantity is to be at least three two to be sent to the lab and
one to be kept at the bulk plant.
d) The sample line/valve must be purged before taking a sample.
3. Sample containers and storage tanks must be labeled with the following
information: Date, formulation, quantity, batch #, bulk plant operator, well #
and cementing job.
4. Samples shall be taken at three different spots.
a. Transfer from Onshore Silo to Boat
b. Transfer from Boat to Silo on Rig
c. Transfer from Silo on Rig Surge Tank

Testing shall be done on all three samples with focus on Sample B. If

sample shows a variance, adjustments shall be made to ensure
accurate blend is pumped down hole. Incase not enough time to send
sample in, full test with sample A shall be alternative.

BULK BLEND TESTING

1. Quick check bulk density of all sample A, used Bulk density chart
generated in the lab to extrapolate actual LW-06 concentration.
2. Complete full as with sample B with minimum below.

a) Thickening Time Test at BHCT

b) Compressive Strength Test, 24 hour (WOC if specified) at BHST (or
TOL if requested)
c) Rheology at 80oF and BHCT
d) Free Fluid and Solids Settling, at BHCT

e) Fluid Loss at BHCT

f) Check Bulk density to check LW-06 concentration
g) Run sensitive test with 5% less LW-06
3. Cementing Contractor shall ensure that there is sufficient time between field
blending and the actual cement job to allow for blending, testing.
