The Viper Perseus Coastal Game rod is a
very good rod and priced at a very attractive
price range. It is a very capable rod landed
hard fighting fishes without issues, even high
drag settings. It feels like a higher end rod as
it lightweight, well balanced, and has a good
feel.

Rod
The Abu Garcia Axecutor is a light weight
rod that looks good coming in black and gold
cosmetics that gives it a sporty looks espe-
cially with the carbon fibre section. It comes
with a 24 ton graphite blank that gives it a
more forgiving flex that an ultra light tackle
rod needs providing needed absorption es-
pecially when fishes make a sudden dash.

The Axecutor comes with stan-

preserving good performance.

Casting Ability
The Axecutor casts well and with confidence;
not wobbling during the cast. It has a tip that
gives a pretty good flick, easily shooting my
1 inch grubs to very good distances allowing
me to cover more area thus increasing my
chances of attracting a fish to bite.
Fish Management
The Axecutor handles very well. Being an ul-
tra light tackle rod it does not come with a
stiff backbone but the Axecutor certainly has
enough power to manage the battles here
without losing any fish. Every battle was well
fought with plenty of ultra light tackle fun.

Test Drives The Asian Angler
F ishing lines are super important and
all anglers want lines that are capable
and able to improve their chances of
catching fish by allowing for better sen-
sitivity, better break strength, and lower
diameter. A line that meets all these cri-
teria is braid. We recently got to test out
the new GT Zero Air PE Braid.

The GT Zero Air PE Braid certainly casts
pretty well sending our baits (fish meat)
towards the area where the gladiators
were hiding out. Within minutes our
fishing rod took a bow signalling that a
gladiator has taken the bait.

Silver Max
83
Fun Reel
Abu Garcia has been bring-
ing us reels for many many
years now. Recently we
fished ultra light with Abu
Garcia’s Silver Max spin-
ning reel; having ultra light
fun with barramundis at a
barramundi pond in Jugra.
85
Looks
The Silver Max spinning
reel good having a simple
and unassuming design. It
comes with a grey body and
gun metal spool colours,
with a black handle. Decent
design and cosmetics in my
opinion.
87
Weight
The weight of the Silver Max
spinning reel, this model es-
pecially, is quite light being
an ultra light reel. It feels
solid too and that is good
especially for adding con-
fidence to anglers when in
battle with a fish.
89
Good Pair
I paired the Silver Max spin-
ning reel with Abu Garcia’s
Axecutor Ultra Light rod and
they made a good pair being
well balanced. There was no
feeling of fatigue fishing the
entire six hours (almost).
91
Perfor mance
I was fishing with 4lb braid-
ed line and smoothness is
important as a jerky sticky
spool will cause the line to
burst. The Silver Max spin-
ning reel performed smooth-
ly and had zero line burst. It
has enough drag to play and
tire the fish out allowing for
lots of fun, even with bigger
fighters.

W hen it comes to fishing, we anglers
want to catch lots of fish; enjoying as many
hard fighting battles as possible. When
it comes to fishing in commercial fish-
ing ponds, the Natural Exotic Fish Fish-
ing (more fondly known as Natural Exotic
Pond) Pond is one of those ponds where
one gets to fight fish after fish and go home
with slightly sore muscles and a big grin.

Location
When friends want to go fishing (espe-

take them to the Natural Exotic Pond
and there have never been a single
complain. It has also been one of our
usual test labs. The pond was then in
Rawang, Selangor. It has since closed
and moved to Behrang in Perak.

Rooms
These days WiFi is one thing that many travellers look for.
WiFi is available at the hotel. There is a recreation area
at the back of the hotel that provides for karaoke, BBQ,
etc. It is also a lovely place to just sit back and relax.
125
Fish i n g
Guests can rent fishing equipment and do some fishing.
One can fish at the hotel’s recreation area when the tide
is high. The jetty is too is a good place to fish. Another
place that the locals fish at is at a ram beside the island’s
volunteer fire department..

Bicycles
Should one want to check out the island; a less tiring
way to do so is to rent an electric bicycle. Electric
bicycles are available for rent at the hotel’s lobby.
Do practise first at the square near the jetty to get a
feel of what riding an electric bicycle feels like. An
electric bicycle will allow one to visit many parts of
the island with ease.
129
Bo a t T o u r s
The hotel provides boat tours (mainly for groups) such
as Sea River Cruise that brings visitors around the
island and to the nearby fish farms. These services
cater mainly to groups. More information is available
at the hotel.
131
Produce Shop
For convenience sake the hotel has its own produce shop
offering seafood or fish products such as dried anchovies,
dried shrimps, dried oysters, Ketam Island’s famous chilli
flakes, titbits, ice cream, etc.

Selangor
Interesting:
One will have to
savour the daily
specialties.
W hen in Kuala Selangor, seafood normally
comes to mind since Kuala Selangor is famous for
its fishing industry and fresh hauls from the sea.
Just go to the seafood area of Kuala Selangor dur-
ing dinner and one will see how packed these res-
taurants get especially during the weekends. That
is dinner. For other meals there are cafes to visit
and one of the latest is Café Lumière.
143
Nice Place To Relax At
145
The concept of Café Lumière is one where they only
serve what is on the menu (main course) that day and
nothing else. During our visit we enjoyed lasagne, cream
of pumpkin soup, and spaghetti Bolognese prepared by
Gerald using only fresh herbs without any premixed sea-
soning.
As for desserts Café Lumière serves delicious cakes that
are not too sweet but yet sweet enough. The cakes come
from the coastal town of Klang in Selangor instead of
nearby bakeries as Gerald and Vivian wanted them in a
certain way being tasty yet not too sweet.
147
Eat And Relax
When in Kuala Selangor and in search
for a place to sit back and relax after
visiting the sites, look no further. Head
to Café Lumière for a tasty meal and re-
lax, allowing time to go by as you chill
out with family /and friends.

167
The clinic began with a talk on the finesse concept by
MGFA Pro Staff, Mr. Ginson Tan. What I understood is
that finesse concept is about creating a presentation that
is as natural as possible. To achieve this, sizing down
tackle is important. From rod, reel, line, lure – the whole
package must be sized down. The finesse approach is
not just important but a must these days. Immense fish-
ing pressure and other factors have affected fish popu-
lations, and the fishes that are around are not easy to
catch.
Next, Ichikawa Fishing Malaysia Pro Staff, Mr. Sam
shared his knowledge on the advantages of Ichikawa
hooks. He previewed a few models which have been in
the Malaysian market such as the Ichikawa J-Spike Jig-
ging Hook, Kamakiri Trebles, B.S.P hooks, and K.O.S.H
single hooks. Being the soft plastic addict that I am, I was
definitely interested in the B.S.P hooks for soft plastic
fishing. The B.S.P wormhooks has a PTFE coating which
makes it feel kind of oily when held in hand. I believe this
can bring an advantage particularly during tournament
situations when each bite matters. The Kamakiri trebles
also have the same coating and are very sharp, making
them the perfect choice for game fish species that don’t
require beefy hooks.
169
Another interesting part of Mr. Sam’s talk was about the
Ichikawa Fishing K.O.S.H single hooks. He said that the
K.O.S.H single hooks were designed specifically to be
used for our local fishing. As we all know Malaysian game
fish such as Giant Snakeheads and Hampala Barbs can
easily destroy even the best hooks out there. The K.O.S.H
hooks certainly seemed strong and worthy of battling
such monsters.
Mr. Ginson continued sharing about suitable setups for
finesse presentations. A spinning setup is certainly pre-
ferred, but there are also casting setups capable of han-
dling light lures well, if not better than spinning setups. It
goes down to personal preference. The important part is
balancing the setup well in order to get the most out of a
lure, and the finesse presentation.
171
Mr. Kenny Chee of Extreme Anglers talked about pre-
senting your lure for a finesse approach. with a focus on
a well balanced setup in order for the finesse presenta-
tion to be effective. For example, a 3-10lb setup with 8lb
line and a 20lb leader would be unfavourable for the fi-
nesse presentation as the thick leader would dampen the
action of the lure thus hampering the presentation.
Mr. Kenny Chee continued on how to present two deadly
finesse lures from ORCraft – Baby Code and Spearyu.
The main techniques are casting it out, and jerking it con-
tinuously, as well as a jerk and pause technique. These
are mainstream approaches which have proven to catch
fish. However, what Mr. Kenny demonstrated next was
completely new to me.
173
The third approach was casting it out and letting it sink
before jerking it upwards similar to jigging and letting it
fall on slack line. Both the Baby Code and Spearyu flutter
on the drop, making them deadly for fishes such as Pea-
cock Bass. During the fall (no matter how long), observe
the slack without reeling and if the slack line begins mov-
ing, slowly crank in line until pressure is felt which means
a fish is on. This technique is responsible for Mr. Kenny’s
monster 63cm Peacock Bass (personal record).
Those are the key points that I can summarize for this
article. The discussion was long and covered a broad
range of topics which also included the type of rods suit-
able for finesse luring, what rod actions, and what kind of
reels (shallow spool or regular spools). These topics are
a bit too long to be discussed here but the key things that
you want are a balanced setup from your rod, reel, line,
leader and even swivel. Light line would be an obvious
advantage for presenting finesse lures and it would help
in detecting bites. Rod length goes down to your person-
al preference and your choice of poundage should match
your line of choice. For more questions you can contact
Mr.Kenny at:
https://www.facebook.com/extremeanglerscustoms/
175
I travelled 2 hours to get to the clinic and I didn’t waste
my chance to go around the shop and snap some pho-
tos. Extreme Anglers Studio 16 has a variety of tackle
which made me drool. A majority of the tackle are from
Malaysian Game Fishing Anglers. Great place to visit if
you need to stock up on MGFA gear. These rods here are
the latest Rod Ford Creations Halfmoon Ultimate Fines-
sizm – made specifically for finesse luring. Economically
priced and well built: they are rods to consider if you need
a finesse rod.
