How to GET THE MOST OUT of the AVKO
BOOK OF THE MONTH
SPELLING PROGRAM - in Three Easy Lessons
To Contact AVKO by Gloria Goldsmith
AVKO MEMBERSHIP LESSON ONE: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS
Whenever a parent calls with a problem, I always ask them to tell me
in detail how they are going about giving the lessons to their student.
AVKO Advocates Almost every time, we discover the parent/teacher has left out an
important step in delivery. They aren't using sentences, or they decide
to spell the word aloud instead of writing it out, or they forget about

the use of color coding when writing the words on a dry erase or

The AVKO process is about giving your student the opportunity to use

to use their olfactory [sense of smell] with all words, we'd promote
that too!)

DOUBLE DUTCH
JUMP ROPE By Gloria Goldsmith
New York Public Schools initially decided it
was another avenue to get more girls
involved in sports. These days, Double
Dutch Jump Rope teams have both boys
and girls involved as a Varsity sport as well
as participating in local and international
competitions!
Here are some ditties something like we used to sing when jumping.

C arron notes some interesting facts in his article series. C ountries that
have a language with a one-to-one ratio (Finland) between the sound
and the symbol for that sound (a letter) the literacy rate is about
97.5%!!! But English is a language comprised of five major languages,
each bringing their own spellings and letter sounds with them. Let me
show you a simple example of what I mean with the sound / f /. We
use the letter "f "in everyday words like "off" or "frost", but we use the
letters -ph from Greek origin words as in "telephone" and "elephant"
for the / f / sound. And of course, we also use -gh from German origin
words for the same / f / sound as in "laugh" or "enough". There are
many other letters which have a variety of spellings for the same
sound. This is why we English users have such a problem deciding how
to spell a word, much less read it. But C arron realizes, as McC abe
does, that spelling and reading go hand-in-hand. When one improves,
so does the other.
C arron has an online research program to help those kids who are
behind in their reading in the UK schools. It is called the Electronic
Library which he speaks about in the articles. I know the sum total of
all the articles is over 60 pages but its well worth reading. He gives the
URL for the Electronic Library and your kids could use it for free while
his research project is going on. But, keep in mind; the stories are in
British English so in some of the more advanced readings there will be

different spellings for some words.
We'd like some feed back from you, our patrons and members. We
think his methods are completely in line with our ideas of reading and
spelling acquisition. Please look it over, follow his directions. read at
least one or two stories, use the comprehension selections and all the
other offerings and email us how it worked for you and your student.
Please keep in mind the early stories are the simple words with few, if
any, different spellings.
