6 Guess the animal


Work in pairs. Select an animal from the lesson, but do not tell your partner. Use the incomplete
sentences below to create clues to help your partner guess the animal. Change roles and repeat the
task for five animals.

1- Classify the animals

Ask the students to think of 2-3 more animals for each category.

3- Predator and prey

Explain the difference between a `predator' (an animal that hunts, kills and eats other animals) and `prey' (an
animal that is hunted and killed by another animal). Several prey are possible for some predators, e.g. wolves can
prey on goats, rabbits and mice and eagles can prey on rabbits and mice. Leopards can also eat young zebras.

4- Talking point

In a multi-lingual class, the students can work in pairs, ideally with partners of different nationalities. Pre-teach the
term `endangered species' (an animal which may soon not exist because there are very few alive).

5- Animal similes

Explain the term `simile' - an expression in which two unlike things are compared. Pre-teach any unfamiliar words,
e.g. awkward (clumsy, unskilful in movement).
