Base 10 & Number Line Addition

Through this lesson, students are going to learn to utilize the number line method within
base ten to solve three-digit addition problems.

SLIDE 1 AND 2 + Review simple addition and place value meaning 5 min
OBJECTIVES Understand how to set up the number line to be effective
Review and discuss order of steps needed to complete the problem.

**Pass out worksheet that has all questions**

SLIDES 3 AND 4 Introduce 1st problem (699+210) 10 min


Show and explain how to solve with base 10
Explain the steps and then move into solving the problem
o Bring 699 down to first spot on the number line
o Add 1 to make a FRIENDLY NUMBER and explain
o Take the 200 out of the hundreds place, and add it to 699, which =
899
o Take 10 out of the tens place, and add to the 899 to find the final
answer
699+210=909
Students should be solving with you on their paper.

ANSWER Answer questions about the first problem and the number line system used to UP TO 5 MIN
QUESTIONS solve the question.
REGARDING SLIDE 1
Review the order of operations one more time to prepare students for the
second question.

Show and explain how to solve with base 10
Allow students time to solve 2nd question on their own.
After 2-3 minutes, pick sticks to choose a child to answer questions on what
they did for each step and the answer they got, for either base 10 or number
line.
Move the PowerPoint along with their answers

FINAL REVIEW AND Answer any further questions 1 min


QUESTIONS Push students on their way to finishing the rest of the worksheet (3 more
questions)
Walk around the classroom and talk through problems with students
individually

Check for Understanding: To check for understanding, I will collect worksheets, and pull aside
any students who dont seem to be grasping the material. With questions being asked
throughout the lesson, I should have a pretty good idea of who is understanding and who is
not.
