Four year Integrated B.A. -B. Ed / B. Sc. -B.

Ed
Do you want to become a teacher? Are you interested in the profession of teaching? If yes,
pursuing teacher training courses will be of help to you. Talking about teacher training
courses, let us check out the relatively new Integrated B.Ed. program that has been rolled out
in India in the recent past.
B.Ed. is an academic qualification that is necessary for teaching at secondary and higher
secondary school levels in India. If you want to take up teaching (secondary and higher level)
as a profession, you must possess this Degree.
In its traditional format, B.Ed. is a Degree course that can be pursued after completing
graduation (minimum eligibility criteria). Graduates (or those holding even higher
qualifications), who have successfully completed relevant graduation program, are eligible to
pursue this course. Previously, B.Ed. programs duration was 1 year. But this academic
program has been revised and the duration was increased to 2 years from academic session
2015-2016 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
This means that at present, if one wants to pursue B.Ed. after graduation, it will take about 5
years to complete the whole process. For example- Completing relevant undergraduate
Degree course like B.Sc. or B.A. will take 3 years. This has to be followed by B.Ed. In total,
this will take 5 years (3+2) to complete.
But Integrated B.Ed. program can be pursued right after 12th. Also, the course duration is 4
years. Yes, 1 year less than the time taken in the traditional B.Ed. method.
Integrated Bachelor of Education course can be said to be a Dual Degree program. At the end
of the program, a student will obtain two Degrees. The two Integrated B.Ed. programs
introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development are- B.Sc. + B.Ed. and B.A. +
B.Ed.
It is evident that the program is Dual Degree in nature. The Government has introduced this
course to address the problem of shortage of qualified teachers that India has been facing
for a while now. With this course, the Government wants to attract more and more students
towards the profession of teaching. Through this course, not only does the Government want
to increase the number of teachers in India, but also to improve the quality of teacher
training/education in this country.
Duration: The duration of the entire program is 4 years. Thus, it takes 1 year less than the
usual duration it takes for one to complete B.Ed. in the traditional way.
Eligibility criteria: B.Sc. B.Ed. course- 10+2 passed in Science stream from a recognized
board. Minimum aggregate mark required is generally around 50% (scored in 12th board
examination).
Eligibility criteria: B.A. B.Ed. course- 10+2 passed in any stream (English subject is
compulsory) from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate mark required is generally around
50% (scored in 12th board examination). D.Ed. (Diploma) holders are eligible to secure
admission directly in the second academic year of this course.
Course structure: The academic program is divided into 4 academic years. Main evaluation
examinations are carried out at the end of each academic year. Subjects present in the
Integrated B.Ed. program depends on the subjects that a student had in 12th standard and/or
the group that he/she chose.
PG courses and higher studies: After completing Integrated B.Ed. course, one may go for
Integrated Masters programs such as M.Sc. M.Ed. or M.A. M.Ed., with relevant subjects.
Other than the integrated format, graduates are also eligible to go for M.Sc., M.A. and M.Ed.
programs separately. This can be followed up with further advanced courses like M.Phil. and
PhD.
Career prospects and job opportunities: After completing B.Sc. B.Ed. or B.A. B.Ed.
Integrated course, graduates are eligible to take up teaching job at secondary or higher
secondary levels. To get Central Government teachers post, one must appear for (and score
well in) CTET test. For getting job in State Government run school, one must appear for (and
score well in) State-wise TETs held by the respective PSC of the State.
