Problem 2: (from textbook) (10 marks)

Problem 3: (old exam) (10 marks)

A 60-mm bore 02 series angular-contact ball bearing is selected for an industrial machine operating
at 600 rpm. Radial and thrust loads are 1.0 and 2.49 kN respectively, with no to light impact.
(a) Estimate the life of this bearing in hours with 90 percent reliability.
(b) Estimate the life of this bearing in hours with 99 percent reliability.
(c) Estimate its reliability when used for an industrial machine intended for continuous one-shift
(8 hours/day) operation having maximum recommended life for this application.

Problem 4: (old exam) (15 marks)

The bevel pinion drives the bevel gear. The free body diagram of gear shaft is shown. The thrust load
is supported by a deep-groove ball bearing at C. The gear shaft diameter is 25 mm. The shaft rotates
at 300 rpm with no impact. The desired life is 4000 hours and the bearing set reliability is 95%.
Note: for simplicity, the thrust force coupling moment on the shaft has been eliminated (ignored) in
the figure.

a. Select an appropriate deep-groove bearing at C from Table 11-2.

b. Comment on the selected bearing for its desired application.

Problem 5: (old exam) (15 marks)
In the figure, a shaft used for commercial gearing applications is loaded by a lateral force of 200 N at
300 mm from bearing A, and loaded axially by a thrust force, Ft. The shaft has an effective spread
between the directly-mounted bearings of 1000 mm. Bearings A and B are single-row tapered roller
bearings with types: (cone L44643/cup 44610) and (cone 1780/cup 1729), respectively, selected
from Figure 11-15. Assume a standard catalog bearing reliability.

a) Calculate the range of the thrust force, (Ft)max > Ft > (Ft)min , that can be applied to the shaft to ensure
the net thrust is carried by bearing B, while ensuring a minimum desired life of 5(10) 14 revolutions at
bearing B.
b) Find the expected life of bearing A when Ft = (Ft)min.
c) For Ft = (Ft)min , if we change the mounting of the two bearings to indirect mounting, calculate the net
thrust force and identify which bearing, (A) or (B), will carry thrust?
