The 2014 Western Star model 4700 mixer demo on
display is a fully functional bridge formula Redi-Mix
Concrete truck. The configuration features a 20,000#
set forward front axle and a 46,000# rear axle riding
on a Hendrickson Haulmaxx 46,000 lb suspension.
Powered by a Detroit DD13 450HP/1650 lb ft torque
engine, the truck is coupled with an Allison 4700,
7 speed automatic transmission that includes an extra-
low 2nd reverse. The 11 yard Contech high performance
mixer features a fast charge 48" Charge Hopper, double
acting chute hoist and 150 gallon cross mounted water
tank. The unit is rounded out with a BridgeKing trailing
axle and steerable pusher. Customers that have had a
chance to look at this mixer are exceptionally impressed

What is a Bi-stable Relay?

Standard relay operation
An automotive style relay is a switching device that allows a larger amount
of current to be controlled by a smaller current. There are a number of pin Pin 87a (N.C.)
configurations used on these devices. The typical 5-pin relay has two sets Spring
of contacts (normally open and normally closed). Figure 1 illustrates a
standard 5-pin relay internal schematic. These contacts are operated by a Pin 30
small electromagnetic coil located inside the relay that opens the normally Pin 87 (N.O.)
closed set of contacts and closes the normally open set of contacts when the
relays coil is energized. The normally closed set of contacts is held closed
by a spring so the coil must remain energized to hold the contacts open.

be surge-suppressed. On EPA07 Cascadias equipped with Version 5.X Sam Coil
Cabins, some of these relays may have current flowing through the relay
coils even when the ignition is off. Relays, located in the SAM Cabin, which Surge-Suppression
control accessory loads in the cab and sleeper, may be powered through the Resistor
LVD (Low Voltage Disconnect) controlled circuits in the SAM. These loads
are wired through the normally closed contacts in these relays. When the Figure 1: Standard 5-Pin Relay
truck is shutdown and battery voltage starts dropping, the SAM Cabin will
power the coils of these relays to turn the loads off. The relay coils remain
powered causing a small drain on the vehicles batteries. Figure 2: Bi-stable Relay 1 Control Ground

Beginning with Version 6.0 SAM Cabins, the relays that operate Low 2 Control Battery
Voltage Disconnect controlled circuits are Bi-stable Relays. These relays
operate differently than standard automotive relays. These devices do not Positive
use a spring to hold contacts closed. There is only one set of contacts. The
relays armature contains a permanent magnet which is affected by mag- 3 Control Ground
netic fields created by two coils; one that is wound clockwise and the other CLOSED
that is wound counter-clockwise (see Figure 2). Voltage is supplied to the Internal Magnet
center pin (#2) of the coil assembly. Pins 1 or 3 may be grounded one at a
time to reverse the poles of the electromagnetic coil. Switching the poles
causes the armature to rotate one way or the other. The armature rotated 4 Input or Output
clockwise opens the contacts between pins 4 and 5. The armature rotating
counter-clockwise closes the contacts. Since there is no spring holding the
contacts closed, current is only required while the armature is rotated from 5 Input or Output
one side to the other. The SAM Cabin monitors the voltage on pins 4 and
5 to determine which state (open or closed) the relay is in. When it needs
to change state, the SAM controller grounds the appropriate coil winding
and monitors pins 4 and 5 to determine whether the relay changed state Pin 5
or not. If it did change to the requested state the SAM controller opens the
control circuit and the relay stays in that state without any current passing Pin 2
through the coils. If the relay did not change state as requested the control- Coils
ler will retry five times to force the relay to change state. If it fails to do as
requested after the last attempt, the SAM controller will stop the request
and store a fault code.

With the bi-stable relay disconnected from the SAM Cabin, connect an Pin 3
ohmmeter between pins 4 and 5 (see Figures 4 and 5). Using a 9V battery,
connect the positive terminal of the battery to Pin 2 on the relay. Alternately Pin 4
flip the battery connecting the negative battery terminal to Pins 1 or 3. The
relay should click when the battery is first connected. With the negative
terminal connected to Pin 1 the ohmmeter should show Open or OL (see Figure 3: Bi-stable Relay Schematic
Figure 4). Flipping the battery over and connecting the negative terminal to
Pin 3 should cause the relay to close. The ohmmeter should now demonstrate
a closed circuit, close to 0 ohms (see Figure 5). It is not necessary to hold
the battery against the terminals after the relay has clicked. The contacts
should stay in either the open or closed position after the battery is pulled
away from the relays pins.
