Jesus Christ through preaching repentance and baptism for the remission of sins. By doing so
He created a favorable environment for Jesus to enter and operate in the lives of the people
who heard his message.
Repentance begins when a person comes to understand their true spiritual condition before
the Holy God who made all things.
The true spiritual condition of all people is complete unrighteousness, a spiritual bankruptcy
due to the breaking of Gods law. This is known as sin and everyone, no matter how good they
may appear to be before other people, have this condition. The Bible is very clear about this
fact. Romans 3:23 says, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And Romans
3:10 says, As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. Once a person recognizes
and admits they are guilty of sin and in need of forgiveness, how should they respond to this
disturbing news?
2 Corinthians 7:1011 says, Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves
no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you:
what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what
longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. Godly sorrow, also translated
godly grief, is an acute sense of sadness we experience because of the sins we have
committed. We not only understand and admit we are guilty but we long to make it right
before God. We are in agreement with God that His ways are right and we humble ourselves
before Him seeking His forgiveness and mercy. Many understand the term repentance simply
to mean turning from sin. Certainly, this is part of it, but there is more to the Biblical
definition of repentance.
In the Bible, the word repent means to change ones mind. In Peters sermon on the day of
Pentecost, he concludes with a call for the people to repent (Acts 2:38). Repent from what?
Peter is calling the people who rejected Jesus to change their minds about Him, to recognize
that He is indeed Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36). Peter is calling the people to change their minds
from rejection of Christ as the Messiah to faith in Him as both Messiah and Savior. Thus, in this
passage we see that repentance preceded coming to a saving faith in Christ, just as we saw in
John the Baptists ministry that repentance prepared the way for people to receive Jesus.
Repentance and faith can be understood as two sides of the same coin. It is impossible to
place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about who He is
and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from
ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Thus, Biblical repentance in relation to salvation
is admitting you are a sinner, humbling yourself before God, and changing your mind from
rejection of Christ to faith in Christ. Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be
wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. (Acts 3:19)
However, some people have been taught that they must perform religious ceremony and do
good works for them to receive Gods forgiveness. This is not true. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, For it
is by grace you have been saved through faithand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of
GodNOT BY WORKS SO THAT NO ONE CAN BOAST. Those who rely on their religious works
rather than on the finished work of Jesus Christ demonstrate a prideful heart and lack of
humility before God, relying on their own efforts to gain righteousness. Jesus warned us about
this religious mindset.
Luke 18:9-14 says, To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down
on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a
Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: God, I thank
you that I am not like other peoplerobbers, evildoers, adulterersor even like this tax
collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. But the tax collector stood at a
distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy
on me, a sinner. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before
God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves
will be exalted.
The pharisees were the most religious people in Israel. They constantly were observing every
religious law and duty in their religion. They did countless good works and were considered the
most righteous people in their society. Yet, in this story Jesus shows us that it was the
repentant tax collectpr who was justified before God, not the self-righteous pharisee who relied
upon his own good works.
It is equally important we understand repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one
can repent and come to God unless God pulls that person to Himself. John 6:44 says, No one
can come to Me (Jesus) unless the Father who sent me draws them Acts 5:31 and 11:18
indicate that repentance is something God givesit is only possible because of His grace. All of
salvation, including repentance and faith, is a result of God drawing us, opening our eyes, and
changing our hearts.
While repentance is not a work that earns salvation, repentance unto salvation does result in
works. It is impossible to truly change your mind without that causing a change in action. In the
Bible, true repentance results in a change in behavior. That is why John the Baptist called
people to produce fruit in keeping with repentance (Matthew 3:8). A person who has truly
repented from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life. (2
Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:19-23; James 2:14-26)
In conclusion, repentance, properly defined, is necessary for salvation. The full Biblical meaning
of repentance is a Godly sorrow about the sins we have committed with a desire to make it
right before God, and a change of mind that believes and accepts Jesus as the Messiah and
Savior. This is repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret. The evidence of a
persons faith in Christ will be a change in behavior in which the person turns from their sins
and produces good works for the glory of God.
This world is hostile to our Christian faith and there are many wolves in sheeps clothing sowing
false teaching. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, cling to the truth of Gods word and do not
be led astray! Pray constantly and never forget that you belong to the King! May God richly
bless you all!

INTRODUCTION
Hyperlipidemia, a condition characterized by high levels of circulating fats, is regarded as a
modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. The incidence of
these vascular disorders among South Koreans is increasing at a rapid rate due in part to
adoption of a more Western lifestyle and increased consumption of fatty foods (1). A high-fat
diet has been shown to increase oxidative stress in a variety of tissues, a side effect that may
contribute to the development of numerous degenerative diseases (25).
In order to prevent or moderate oxidation-related diseases, it is necessary to sequester and
eliminate free radicals from the body (6). Antioxidants may offer some resistance to oxidative
stress by scavenging free radicals, inhibiting cell membrane damage, and suppressing lipid
peroxidation, thus preventing the onset of chronic disease (7). There is increasing interest in the
antioxidant activity of the phytochemicals present in our diet and in health food supplements
(8), and a number of studies have demonstrated that antioxidant supplementation prevents or
delays hyperlipidemia-related disease (9,10).
Spinach, which is cultivated globally, is an important dietary vegetable and a common raw
material in the food processing industry (11,12). Spinach is a proven source of essential
nutrients such as carotene (a precursor of vitamin A), ascorbic acid, and several types of
minerals. Although a number of studies have been conducted on the antioxidant activities of
spinach (1214), there is still a relative lack of information available regarding its hypolipidemic
activity.
The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro antioxidant effects of spinach and
evaluate the potential benefits of spinach supplementation in hyperlipidemic rats.

Sample preparation
Spinach, in dried powder form, was obtained from the Spinach Cluster Agency (Jeonnam,
Korea) after being cultivated in Shinan Island, Jeonnam, Korea. For preparation of the hot water
extracts (WE), 5 g of spinach powder was put in a glass bottle with 100 mL of deionized water,
extracted with an autoclave, and freeze dried (Ilshin, Yangju, Korea). The ethanol extracts (EE)
were prepared as follows: 5 g of spinach powder was extracted with 100 mL of ethyl alcohol
and concentrated by evaporator (N-1110S-W, EYELA, Tokyo, Japan). WE and EE were
redissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide to a concentration of 50 mg/mL and aliquots were kept at
20C until used.
Erythrocytic catalase
Erythrocytic hemolysates were prepared by the dilution of erythrocytes to 1:500 with distilled
H2O. One hundred microliter of erythrocytic hemolysate was dissolved in 50 mM phosphate
buffer 50 mL (pH 7), and 2 mL of the mixture was added to a cuvette. The reaction was initiated
by the addition of 1 mL of H2O2 30 nM at 20C. The H2O2 decomposition rate was measured at
240 nm for 30 sec using a spectrophotometer.
Statistical analysis
All measurements were analyzed using the SPSS package for Windows (Ver. 14.0; SPSS,
Chicago, IL, USA). Mean values among concentrations/animal groups were compared using
one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncans multiple range tests (P<0.05).

Plasma conjugated diene concentrations were significantly higher in the HFCD group than in the
ND group (Table 2). Plasma conjugated diene concentrations were decreased in the HFCD+S
group compared to the HFCD group; however, this difference was not statistically significant.

The activity of Mn-SOD was significantly lower in the livers of rats in the HFCD group than in the
livers of rats in the ND group, as shown in Table 2. Liver Mn-SOD activity was greater in the
HFCD+S group than in the HFCD group; however, this difference was not statistically significant.
There was no difference in plasma Cu/Zn-SOD activity among treatment groups.
Tail DNA percentage was greater in the HFCD group than in the ND group, while tail DNA
percentage in the HFCD+S group was not different from that of the ND group (Fig. 3).

DISCUSSION
In this study, we analyzed the TPC and antioxidant activity of spinach in vitro and the effect of
spinach supplementation on antioxidant metabolism in a hyperlipidemic rat model. Previous
reports have suggested that spinach, a vegetable with a high nutritional value, is a rich source
of carotenoids, which are visually obscured by green chlorophyll (24). Several studies have
indicated that spinach leaves contain several powerful and water-soluble natural antioxidants
with potential biological activities (14,2527). Polyphenols are now widely accepted as
physiological antioxidants that have significant potential to protect against the numerous
degenerative diseases linked to free radical-related tissue damage (28). The health benefits of
polyphenols appear to arise from their antioxidant activities and capacity to protect critical
macromolecules, such as chromosomal DNA, structural proteins and enzymes, LDL, and
membrane lipids from damage resulting from exposure to ROS (29,30).
Because different solvent extractions yield different constituents, the spinach used in this study
was extracted with hot water and ethanol. The TPC (147 mg/100 g) of WE was similar to that of
carrot (156 mg/100 g) and onion (150 mg/100 g) (31), while the TPC of EE (51 mg/100 g) was
similar to that of tomato (62 mg/100 g) and nectarine (57 mg/100 g). Our results demonstrate
that WE and EE of spinach exhibit antioxidant activities that are attributable to their high TPC.
The protective ability of spinach extracts against H2O2-induced DNA damage was assessed in
normal human leukocytes by the comet assay. Pretreatment of the cells for 30 min with spinach
extracts significantly reduced the genotoxicity of H2O2, as measured by DNA strand breaks.
Our in vitro experiments demonstrate that spinach extracts exert potent antioxidant activities;
these effects were confirmed in hyperlipidemic rats. Many studies examining the in
vitro antioxidant activity of extracts have also evaluated extract antioxidant activity in oxidative
stress-induced animal models (3234). We show here that hyperlipidemia induced by a fat and
cholesterol-enriched diet increases blood and liver lipid levels in rats, thereby leading to
oxidative stress that can be partly prevented by the antioxidant activities of spinach. Previous
work by Lee et al. (35), showed that the blood lipid concentrations of cholesterol-fed rabbits
are not improved by white ginseng extracts, although antioxidant enzyme activities are
somewhat enhanced. Similarly, work by Kang et al. (36) revealed that the administration of
plant extracts is not effective at lowering blood cholesterol in a hypercholesterolemic model.
These findings can be attributed to the composition of the extract used in the experiments, as
well as the dosages and experimental period. Hence, further investigation is necessary to
determine the precise amount of supplementation necessary to achieve beneficial effects from
spinach and prevent hyperlipidemia.
Remarkably, the addition of spinach to the diet was associated with reduced liver TBARS levels
in the HFCD+S group compared to the HFCD group. As such, spinach treatment may reduce liver
TBARS levels by inhibiting the oxidation of LDL; this would imply that spinach maintains
antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic effects. The plasma concentration of conjugated dienes, a
measure of lipid peroxidation, was dramatically increased the HFCD group compared to the ND
group. However, administration of spinach reduced plasma lipid peroxidation, but the
difference was not significant. Lee et al. (35) reported that the phenolic compounds present in
ginseng extract reduce plasma and liver TBARS levels in hypercholesterolemic rats by increasing
the activity of antioxidant enzymes. These results suggest that spinach may help improve
antioxidant metabolism through the action of phenolic compounds.
Liver Mn-SOD activities of rats fed the HFCD were 28.1% lower than those of rats fed the ND,
which is likely to aggravate existing oxidative stress. Mn-SOD activity was improved by
administration of spinach, while Cu/Zn-SOD was not shown a significant difference among
treatment groups. Previous work indicated that inhibition of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD
occured in many degenerative diseases (37). Mn-SOD is active as an antioxidant enzyme in the
mitochondria, while Cu/Zn-SOD is primarily responsible for the dismutation of superoxide
anions in the cytosol (38). Differential regulation of Mn-SOD and Cu/Zn-SOD may occur under
pathologic conditions (39,40). Oliveira et al. (41) reported that green juice reduced TBARS levels
and catalase activity, suggesting that this type of supplementation may have a protective effect
against reactive species.
Hydroxyl radicals, a kind of reactive species generated by oxidative stress, are also known to
cause oxidation-induced breaks in DNA strands that promote open circular or relaxed DNA
forms (42). WE and EE of spinach showed a robust and concentration-dependent reduction in
the formation of nicked DNA and an increase in super-coiled DNA in in vitro studies, indicating a
beneficial effect of spinach on the resistance of leukocyte DNA to oxidative damage. Our in
vivo studies also confirmed that spinach protects leukocytes from oxidative stress; these effects
are most likely related to the antioxidant properties of spinach. Kim et al. (43) reported that a
leafy vegetable mix prevented lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage in C57BL/6J mice
fed a high fat and cholesterol diet.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that dietary supplementation with
spinach increases antioxidant activity and can improve antioxidant status in hyperlipidemic rats
fed a HFCD. These results demonstrate that spinach alleviates oxidative stress through the
modulation of antioxidant metabolism, resulting in a protective effect against HFCD-induced
DNA damage.

CONCLUSIONS
Spinach extracts exhibit significant TPC, antioxidant activity (ORAC value and CAA), and
antigenotoxic activity. In addition, spinach extract may improve the efficiency of the enzymatic
antioxidant enzymatic system (i.e., Mn-SOD) following deactivation of the substrates for plasma
conjugated dienes, in turn reducing liver TBARS levels and DNA damage in leukocyte of rats fed
a high fat-cholesterol diet. Therefore, the results of the present study indicate that spinach
extract is a potential source of natural antioxidants and its consumption improves antioxidant
status.

ETHODOLOGY
In acquiring the study of Malunggay and Spinach powder, constant research
wasdone. Facts were gained from books and computer resources. The abundance
of the saidvegetables which most of the time left out wilted aroused a curious mind thus the
researchdrew its concept. The accessibility and availability of both vegetables inspired the
researchwhere an actual and continuous propagation was made to ensure freshness
of harvestduring the several process of experimentation. A series of trial and error process
was madewherein an exact time of harvest must be observed and storage in a well -
ventilated roommust be followed. Three rooms in the house were carefully chosen in which a
room at thebasement was ample to suit the experiment need. Both vegetables compliment
each other interms voluminous vitamins and minerals that supplement the everyday nutrient
needs ofpeople in order to fulfill their daily activities.The preparation of Malunggay and Spinach
powder are as follows:Harvest Malunggay and Spinach leaves early morning just when
the dew has dried up.Bundle Malunggay and Spinach leaves and hang upside down in a well-
ventilated room.Don
t expose to sunlight. Use brown paper bag to ca tch falling leaves. Use clothes
pin tosecure the brown paper bag to where you hang both leaves. Allow leaves to fall in the
paperbag. Grind, pound or blend when the leaves dried up. Seal in a container.Varied usage of

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is an edible flowering plant in the family ofAmaranthaceae which

world. It grows to a height of up to thirty(30) centimeters and its leaves are simple, alternate,
ovate to triangular-basedand varies in size from two (2) to three (3) centimeters long and one
to fifteen(15) centimeters broad. Besides of it being considered as an herb rich in Iron, it isalso
a rich source of Carbohydrates, Dietary fiber, Fat, Protein, Vitamin A, Beta-carotene, Lutein,
Zeaxanthin, Folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K andCalcium. It is well-known in stabilizing
the blood sugar among diabetics, itserves as an anti-oxidant, an anti-cancer agent, it prevents
from atherosclerosisor thickening and hardening of arteries and it aids in the formation of the
