How one teaches is necessarily influenced by what one perceives as the goals of legal
education. Certainly, the primary goal is to prepare you to be effective lawyers, judges
and policy makers. At a minimum, that includes helping you to develop the ability to:
*understand the expressions of others; particularly those who are different than
yourself;
*understand human nature, particularly the motivations and needs of your clients,
opponents, jurors, judges, etc.;
*use the techniques of the legal profession to represent a client in general matters, to
recognize where you lack competence, and to comply with accepted ethical standards
Educational Implications
Create many opportunities for students to analyze others' points of view for their
evidentiary adequacy and to develop and defend their own points of view about
controversial issues.
Teach students strategies for systematically gathering data, assessing the relevance of
the data, evaluating data sources, and making interpretive judgments based on the
available data.
Give students frequent feedback, and provide both cognitive and emotional support
for their efforts.
Encourage students to practice their reasoning skills in many settings, from their
other classes to their practicum sites, student organizations, residence hall councils,
and elsewhere, to gain practice and confidence applying their thinking skills.
