IIG Academy

1. A-Z Word Race


When to use: At the beginning of the lesson (Warm-up)
Objectives: To review vocabulary on Things in your room
Preparation: None
Procedure:
- Write the topic Things in your bedroom on the board
- Orally review the vocabulary on Things in your room (bed, poster, etc.)
- Ask Teaching Assistant to write the 26 letters of the alphabet on the board. (5 columns,
5 rows)
- Divide class into two teams, A and B
- Explain the rule to the class:
+ Each team sends a representative to the board
+ Representatives try to write down words which belong to the topic as fast as possible
and start with any letter.
+ Team A is asked to write UPPERCASE words, and team B lowercase.
+ Teams can change representatives anytime they want, and can give clues to their
representatives.
+ After 5 minutes, Teacher stops the game and counts the words each team has written
correctly.
+ The team with more correct words will be the winner.

2. Board game: Have you ever ?


When to use: at the beginning of the lesson (Warm-up)
Objectives: to practice ordering food
Preparation: a handout and a dice or a set of 1-6 numbered cards for each group
Structure for practice: Id like to have .
Procedure:
- Write down the structure on the board
- Divide students into groups of 2 or 3. Each chooses a counter for themselves (i.e. a
rubber, a pen cap, etc.)
- Give each group a handout and a dice/a set of numbered cards.
- Introduce the rule of the game:

+ Group members play rock, scissors, paper to decide who to play first.
+ The first player tosses the dice/ picks up a card and moves forward that
number of squares.
+ S/he says Id like to have using the picture given in the square.
+ If he/she can make a correct sentence, the players counter remains where
it is. If the question is incorrect, the counter returns to its original square.
+ Students take turns to play the game, and move around the board until
one student reaches FINISH. This student is the winner.
- Give Ss about 10 minutes
- Monitor the class
- Have 4-5 students make some questions and give feedback

3. Cant Say Yes or No


When to use: beginning of the lesson (warm up)
Objectives: to review learned vocabulary/language and to have fun.
Preparation: a set of 10 colored paper cards for each student
Grammar for revision: Comparative adjectives
Procedure:
- Orally review the words with students
- Write down the topic Comparative adjectives on the board.
- Give each student a set of colored paper cards
- Introduce the rule:
+ Students go around the classroom and ask their classmates questions regarding the
topic on the board.
+ If a classmate says Yes or No, he/she has to give a card to the one who has asked
him/her the question.
- Teacher and Teaching Assistant make a sample question-answer
- Continue the game for a few minutes
- Check who has the most cards

4. Card game
Type: group work (4- 5 students)
When to use:
Objectives: to compare life in the country and in the city

Preparation: a handout for each group (cut off)


Procedure:
- Divide students into groups of 4-5 students
- Give each group a set of cards
- Explain how to play the game
+ Students put the set of cards in the center of the group
+ Each student takes turn to pick up a card and make a sentence with the word comparing
the country with the city. For example, quiet - I think the country is quieter than the
city.
+ If a student has difficulty making a statement, other members help him/her.
- Give students about 10 minutes
- Check with class: call some students in random to make sentences in front of class.

5. CHAIN SPEAKING
When to use: at the beginning (warm-up)
Objective: to practice making small conversation (speaking) and to have lots of fun.
Preparation: 6-8 questions (see below)
Procedure:
Make lines: Ask students to make two lines with equal number of students on
each line. (Tip: ask students on each line to count from 1 to end).
Greetings: When settled, ask students on both lines to turn around to face each
other and say Hi/Hello to their partner.
Explain the rule:
- Teacher says aloud (/writes) a question/topic, each pair will have around 1 min to talk
on the question/topic.
- After 1 min, teacher claps hands. All stop talking and say Goodbye to their partners.
- The first student from Line 1 (i.e. on the right) runs to the end of her/his line. All other
students on that very line move forward to face a new partner; while the OTHER LINE
(i.e. on the left) stay still. New pair says Hi/Hello.
- Teacher says aloud (/writes) another question/topic and the activity goes on until end.
Check the rule: Ask: What will I give you? (Questions), What will you do? (Talk
to partner on the question) What will you do when you hear hands clapping?
(Stop talking). Who will run? (Only one person) Who move forward? (all the
other on that line) Who stay? (the other line)
Begin the game with question 1, then 2 until end. Remember to ask them to say
Hello and Goodbye while doing the game.

Feedback: Ask students if they have any interesting information to share with
their classmates.

2. What special dish did you eat during your holiday?
3. What do you like most about your holiday?
4. What do you dislike about your holiday?

6. With whom do you want to spend time most in this new year?

6. Comparative adjectives crossword


9. When to use: after completing the grammar section in the book
10. Objectives: to review comparative adjectives
11. Preparation: one printed worksheet for each pair
12. Procedure:
13. - Ask students to work in pairs, and give out a worksheet to each pair
14. - Ask students to do the crossword by finding the opposites of the given adjectives
in the list.
15. - Ask students to fill in the sentences with the comparative form of the words
theyve found from the crossword.

7. Crazy table
When to use: At the beginning of the lesson (Warm-up)
Objectives: review past simple and present perfect
Preparation: 2 sets of different coloured cards (cut off from handout 1)
Procedure:
- Divide students into 2 groups
- Put 2 sets of cards on teachers table; assign each set to each group
- Explain the rules to students:
+ Each member of the group goes to the teacher to take one card and bring it to
his/her group.
+ Group members work to give the correct forms of the verb in brackets on the card.
+ After that, s/he brings the card back to the teacher to check. If the answer is correct,
the group can move on to take another card.
+ Students must not take more than 1 card at a time
+ The group that finishes first will be the winner.

8. Drawing
When to use: beginning of the lesson (warm up)
Objectives: to review learned vocabulary/language and to have fun.
Preparation: a pack of 15 A4 size papers and 2-3 marker pens
Words for revision: Food and Containers (bottle, box, glass, can, pasta, bread,
banana, egg, apple, ice cream, carrot, tomato)
Procedure:
- Orally review the words with students
- Divide students into 2 groups
- Write down the topic Food and Containers on the board.
- Introduce the rule of the game:
+ Each group sends a representative to the board.
+ Teacher whispers a word to the two representatives. They will draw it on a sheet of
paper and show it to their group without saying the word out loud.
+ Groups look at the drawings and say the word. The group which gives the correct
answer first will get a point.
+ Change the representative after each word.
+ At the end of the game, the group with more points will be the winner.

9. Find Someone Who


When to use: After the writing section
Objective: to practice asking and answering Do you?
Preparation: one handout for each student
Procedure:
- Write the question Do you ? on the board and get students to make some
example questions. Elicit answers from students.
- Give a handout to each student
- Explain the rule:
+ Students walk around and ask Do you questions using the verb phrases given.
+ Students note down the names of those who say Yes to the questions.
+ Student who has the same name in a row says Bingo and is the winner.

- Call some students to make a presentation about 5 different classmates (Lien


sometimes uses the internet, Hoa ..) and give feedback on their
grammar/pronunciation.

10. Finding the right help


When to use: After activity 3 page 61 in the student book
Objectives: To practice asking and offering for help
Preparation: 1 set of problem cards, and 1 set of solution cards (cut off)
Procedure:
- Write down the activity title Finding the right help on the board
- Divide class into 2 groups, A and B
- Give groups their set of cards, group A gets the problem cards, group B gets the
solution cards. Each member of the group gets one card.
- Ask group A members to come to group B and read their problems. Group B
members listen and read out their card if they think the solution on their card is
relevant. If the problem and the solution match, the pair sits down. If they are not, A
moves on to ask another one, and B waits for the relevant problem.
For example: A: Im cold. B: Ill get you a blanket. (Match Sit down)
A: Im cold. B: Ill get you a sandwich. (Dont match Move on)
- Continue until all the pairs have found each other.
- Check with the whole class by calling the pairs to read their cards.

11. Guessing the Person


When to use: At the beginning of the lesson (Warm-up)
Objectives: To review vocabulary on jobs and adverbs of frequency
Preparation: None
Procedure:
- Write the topic Jobs, Adverbs of Frequency on the board
- Orally review the vocabulary on Jobs, Adverbs of Frequency
- Divide class into two or three teams
- Explain the rule to the class:
+ Teacher chooses one job secretly, and describes it to students. For example, This
person usually gets up really early. and This person rarely faces danger. (for a
postman).
+ Teams guess the job based on the teachers clues.

+ The team which gives a correct answer first will score one point.
+ At the end of the game, the team with more points will be the winner.

12. Hot Seat


When to use: At the beginning of the lesson (Warm-up)
Objectives: To review vocabulary on Free-time activities
Preparation: a list of words/phrases to be written on the board (listen to music,
dance, swim, play football, drums, guitar, piano, sing, play tennis, read a book, ride a
bike, watch TV, go shopping, sleep)
Procedure:
- Write the topic Free-time activities on the board
- Orally review the vocabulary on Free-time activities
- Divide class into two teams, A and B
- Explain the rule to the class:
+ Each team sends a representative to sit in the Hot Seat
+ Teacher writes a word/phrase on board.
+ Teams members help their representatives to guess the word by describing it. They
have a limited amount of time and cannot say, spell or draw the word.
+ The representative who first guesses the word correctly will score one point for their
team.
+ Continue the game for about 15 minutes and decide the winner.

13. Terrys Timetable Information Gap Activity


When to use: after completing activity 5a on page 49
Objectives: to practice asking and telling the time
Preparation: one printed handout for each pair (cut off paper)
Procedure:
- Ask students to work in pairs, and give out a handout to each pair
- Run through the examples and the missing subjects with the students (as on the
handout)
A: Is the chemistry lesson at 9:30 on Monday?
B: Yes, it is./No, it isnt.
- Ask students to ask their partner about the time of each subject to fill in the
timetable. Their question-answer should be like this:

14. Memory game


When to use: at the beginning of the lesson (warm-up activity)
Objective: to check students vocabulary on free-time activities and to have fun
Preparation: None
Procedure:
- Orally review free-time activities with the class
- Write Free-time activities on the board
- Divide class into team A and team B
- Ask one member of team A to start by saying the following sentence:
In my free time, I listen to music.
- Ask one member of team B to repeat the sentence and add another activity, e.g.
In my free time, I listen to music and dance.
- Each team in turn repeats the sentence and adds another activity. The students have
to concentrate hard to remember all the things in the correct order.
- For each correct sentence, students get one point for their team.
- At the end of the game, the team with more points will be the winner.

15. Miming
When to use: beginning of the lesson (warm up)
Objectives: to review learned vocabulary/language and to have fun.
Preparation: none
Words for revision: Activity verbs (go swimming, go shopping, read a book, watch
television, listen to music, play video games, play football, ride a bike, play the
piano, meet friends, do homework)
Procedure:
- Orally review the words with students
- Write down the topic Activity verbs on the board.
- Divide students into 2 groups
- Introduce the rule of the game:
+ Each group sends a representative to the board.

+ Teacher shows a word/phrase to the two representatives. They will use actions to
describe it to their group without saying the word out loud.
+ Groups look at the actions and say the word. The group which gives the correct
answer first will get a point.
+ At the end of the game, the group with more points will be the winner.

16. Two Truths & One Lie


When to use: After Speaking Section
Objectives: To practice some verb phrases and present perfect
Preparation: 1 handout for 1 student
Procedure:
- Write the activity name 2 truths and 1 lie (Present Perfect) on the board.
- Give handouts to students
- Ask students to write 2 true statements (2 truths) and 1 false statement (1 lie) about
himself/ herself using present perfect. Make an example: I have made a cake 1 truth,
I have swum in the sea 1 truth, I havent traveled on a train 1 lie.
- Ask students to keep their sentences secret
- Call each student to read out his/her statements for the whole class to guess whether
each statement is a truth or a lie.
- Check if the guess is correct or not.

17. The Waiter Role-play

Objectives: to practice language used when eating out at a restaurant
Preparation: one handout for each group of 3, cut off the menus.
Language for practice:

Procedure:
- Invite TA to do Demo with the teacher: T: waiter, TA: customer:
-Are you ready to order?
-Id like to have
- Split the class into groups of three or two. One student from each group is the
waiter. The other students are the customers.
- Give each waiter a menu, a role card, some paper and a pencil.
-Give customer(s) a menu.
- The customers order, the waiter follows the instructions on the card, takes the
orders, and bring the meals
-Ask 1 or 2 groups to the front to act out the conversation.
- Give feedback on structure and language used.

18. Places in the town song


When to use: at the beginning of the lesson (warm-up activity)
Objective: to review vocabulary on places in the town and giving directions
Preparation: a song, one handout for each student
Procedure:
- Orally review places in the town and giving directions expressions with the
class
- Write Places in the town on the board
- Give each student a handout

+ For exercise 1, teacher plays the song twice, students listen and write down the
missing words
+ For exercise 2, Teacher plays the song once, students listen and write down the
missing names of places
- Check answer with students

19. Tongue twisters


When to use: after the pronunciation section in the coursebook.
Objective: to practice the /u:/ sound
Preparation: 1 handout for each student
Procedure:
- Give the handouts to students
- Read the text to class
- Ask students to underline the words with the /u:/ sound and practice reading them
- Read the text to class again, slowly, then faster. Ask students to listen and repeat.
- Teacher can try dividing class into 2 groups, each group takes turn read one line.
- Call some students to read the text and give feedback.

20. Toss the ball (with music)


When to use: beginning of the lesson (warm up)
Objectives: to review vocabulary on daily activities and to have fun.
Preparation: a paper or rubber ball and some fun music
Words for revision: Daily activities (get up, have a shower, have breakfast, go to
school, have lunch, finish school, go home, have dinner, do homework, go to bed, play
video games, go shopping, go on the internet, listen to music, read books, etc.)
Procedure:
- Write down the topic Daily activities on the board
- Orally review the words with students
- Explain the rule to students:
+ Teacher plays the music
+ Students pass the ball to each other.

+ After 15-20 seconds or so, teacher pauses the music.


+ When the music is paused, the student with the ball has to say a daily activity.
- Teacher resume the music, get the ball moving on, and repeat the procedure with
students.

21. Sports Wordsearch


When to use: After the Writing section in the course book
Objectives: To review different sports
Preparation: 1 handout for each pair
Duration: 7-10 minutes
Procedure:
- Orally review different sports names with class
- Give one handout to each pair
- Explain the rule to the class:
+ Pairs work to number the pictures using the sports names given.
+ Pairs work to find the different sports in the table. The hints are the sports names
given above. The words can be in different directions.
+ Pairs say Bingo when they finish.
- Check the pair(s) which has the most correct answers.

22. Complete the sentences with because/so


When to use: At the beginning of the lesson (warm-up)
Objectives: To practice using because/so and to have fun
Preparation: A list of statements to write on board
Structure for practice: Because/So ..
Procedure:
- Explain usage of because and so to class
- Make some examples with the class: I like dogs because they are loyal., etc. I want
to be healthy, so I walk a lot.
- Divide class into 3-4 groups (groups should have equal number of members)
- Explain the rule to the class:
+ Each group makes a line facing the board
+ Teacher writes a sentence on the board.

+ The students task is to complete the sentence, and write it under the sentence. They
must start their answer with "because/so".
For example:
Teachers sentence: I like cats
Students answers:
because they are playful.
so I have three cats at home.
+ The students at the front of the line write their sentence and then go to the back of
the line. Continue until each student has written an answer on the board.
+ The first group to finish with the most correct answers gets a point.
+ Play again starting with the next sentence from the List.
+ At the end of the game, the group with the most points is the winner.
