Former Public Insurance Counsel and Workers' Compensation Commissioner Rod Bordelon joins Granite Public Affairs
AUSTIN - Rod Bordelon, an 11-time gubernatorial appointee, joins Granite Public Affairs where he will lead the firms insurance and regulatory affairs practice. Well respected throughout state government and industry, Rod brings more than 30 years experience working with consumers, regulators, legislators, and stakeholders. His background includes an appointment by Governor George W. Bush, and re-appointment by Governor Rick Perry, as the states Public Insurance Counsel. Perry subsequently appointed him as the Commissioner of Workers Compensation.
As Workers Compensation Commissioner, his accomplishments included the implementation of reforms that resulted in significant market performance improvements and cost savings, a 50 percent drop in rates of insurance premiums, and increased performance within the agency. As Texas Public Insurance Counsel, he negotiated numerous regulatory reforms and was instrumental in implementing flexible file-and-use rate and form procedures in property and casualty lines of insurance, reducing regulatory delays, and increasing competition in the insurance marketplace.
Rods experience as an agency leader, and as a voice for consumers, will provide our clients with trusted counsel and a seasoned voice before regulators and policy makers, said Justin Keener, a partner at Granite Public Affairs.
Rod most recently served as policy director of Texans for Free Enterprise, where he advocated for price competition in the title insurance market. TFE remains a client of Rods and the firms. Rod has served on several boards and commissions, including the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions, Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Legislative Oversight Committee, Texas Surplus Lines Stamping Office, Interstate Product Regulation Commission, Southern Association of Workers Compensation Administrators, and Texas Certified Self-Insurance Guaranty Association.
Raised in Laredo where he spent his early years working on his familys South Texas cattle ranch, Rod graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and received his law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston.
