Part B

Justification-
The purpose of this poster is to promote the Texts in Time Conference that will
focus on the texts Animal Farm by George Orwell and Elysium directed by Neill
Blomkamp. Both texts represent the struggle against power and oppression. In
Animal Farm, this struggle is represented by the battle for power between the pigs
and other animals, while. in Elysium, the issue with power is seen between the
inhabitants of the people in Elysium and the people back on Earth who are denied
entry to the technologically advanced Elysium.

The fist is a universal symbol of power and it is a common value in Animal Farm and
Elysium. It is the salient image that attracts the readers attention. The placement of
the fist is in the centre foreground, emphasises the main idea of the struggle for
power in Animal Farm and the power used to oppress people on earth in Elysium. In
Animal Farm, we clearly see power being corrupted despite the initial ideal being
that All animals are equal which overtime subtly changes to All animals are equal,
but some animals are more equal than others. The colour of the hand is brown
representing humanity. We see in Elysium clearly the people on Earth are
dehumanised and oppressed by the richer higher-class people in Elysium. The
distance of the hand from the Earth visually represents that earth is under threat and
is controlled metaphorically by force as represented by the clenched fist. In Elysium,
power has oppressed everyone on Earth. The poster visually represents the key
concerns and themes of the two texts.

Earth is also the focal point of the image. Earth is the dystopian world, overpopulated
and environmentally degraded. The colours black and grey are used to depict Earth
and these colours are muted and were chosen to indicate the degradation. People
are starving on earth and illegally seek to gain entry to Elysium to have access to the
more advanced medical technology available to the privileged rich. Earth is a distinct
aspect of this image as it presents both Animal Farm and Elysium main focus as
shows the obscurity implying there are issues with Earth.

The red background is symbolic of blood, danger and power. Animal Farm is based
on the Russian revolution. The propaganda posters of the time used the colour red
to serve and attract peoples attention for war this represents Lenins red Army which
was powerful then. The red background in Elysium is to represent Earth as a
dangerous place to live we scenes of people treated brutally and dehumanised.
Reflection-
1. What part of the task did you find rewarding?
The part of the task I found rewarding was the help and assistance of the teachers.
The amount of time we had to do the task and the amount of class time was greatly
appreciated. The class time we had, was needed for me to complete my task, it
allowed me get help from teachers face to face and the feedback on the on the spot
with the progress I made with my poster. Another rewarding thing was with my
poster, I could be as creative as I wanted to be when designing the poster. I was not
restricted to things eg font, background and the overall image. I took advantage of
the fact I could put my ideas from both Animal Farm and Elysium and visually
represent it, through the uses of visually literacy techniques and metaphors.

2. What part of the task did you find challenging to complete?

The challenging part to complete was the drawing. The process in drawing the fist
was difficult as it was hand drawn rather than a photo from the internet, also the
colours were a bit difficult to match, using specific colour was difficult as it had to
have meaning and a relation from Animal Farm and Elysium. Earth was difficult to
represent as I didn't know if I should make the exterior black and grey or green white
and blue. A huge issue for me was what images to put on the poster and the thought
process of it having a meaning to it and metaphorically representing them from
Animal and Elysium. Another thing I found challenging to complete was the
justification section I spent a lot time thinking due to the word limit being 400-500.

3. How did you overcome these challenges?

I overcame these challenges by bouncing ideas of my fellow classmates. Google
images, was really helpful in the sense of what images I should add to represent my
key ideas in a metaphorical way, images that had to be relating from both Animal
Farm and Elysium. Also, the teacher's assistance and help, with the colour scheme
of my poster and the designing of my poster, where things should be placed and
what colours should be used to have a more deeper meaning ,which allowed to
surpass the word limit for the justification section.
