Los incas tomaron la decisin en 1465 de establecer en Cajamarca una nueva provincia
que sirviera de puente para sus conquistas posteriores. Siendo la ciudad de
Cajamarca una de las ciudades ms antiguas del Amrica del Sur, pues ya exista cuando
llegaron los espaoles en la Conquista.

rescate ms elevado de la historia.
En 1532, en su plaza principal, fue capturado el Inca Atahualpa, quien ofreci a Francisco
Pizarro un cuantioso rescate para su liberacin. Siendo incumplido por parte de los
espaoles, es ejecutado Atahualpa un ao ms tarde, pasando los tesoros quechuas
trados de todo el tahuantinsuyo a manos de los conquistadores, quienes lo enviaron para
Espaa.
La independencia
Casi tres siglos despus, el 2 de enero de 1821, Cajamarca, jur suindependencia, poco
despus de que lo hicieran Quito y Trujillo. El 2 de mayo de 1866, Espaa intent
recuperar su poder sobre la naciente repblica y se libra el Combate del Dos de Mayo,
dirigiendo a las tropas peruanas desde el torren de la Merced en el Castillo del Real
Felipe, el Ministro de Guerra, Jos Glvez, oriundo de Cajamarca.
Later Cajamarca culture (in Quechua: Kashamarka), 23 famous for its beautiful

The independence

On February 11, 1855, it established its autonomy, the product of the armed
Revolution led by Toribio Casanova Lpez, Pedro Villanueva and Juan Army for
the recognition of the Department of Cajamarca as such and its independence
from the Department of La Libertad.
