Design Information
Steam Coils are available with O.D. tubes in one or two row configurations. The tubes have 1 spacing and two-row
coils have a staggered tube pattern for efficient heat transfer. The coil assembly is leak tested at 300 PSIG hydrostatic
pressure. Supply and return connections are at opposite ends. When tubes are installed vertically, the Basic Steam Coil
provides excellent freeze protection. With tubes horizontal, the Basic Steam Coil is used primarily for re-heat applica-
tions. Heavy Duty Steam Coils are suitable for steam pressures to 235 PSIG and temperatures to 400F. Non-Freeze
Steam (Steam Distributing) coils with inner steam distributing tubes provide uniform steam distribution throughout
the face of the coil. Supply and return connections are on the same end. When finned length exceeds 72, a second
supply connection is provided on the opposite end.
TUBES:
O.D. seamless copper tubes (stainless steel and cupro-nickel available) are expanded into fin collars to form a
rigid mechanical bond. Heavy wall tubing is available for high pressure applications.
Copper to copper joints are made with a high temperature brazing alloy and steel joints are made with a bronze
brazing alloy.
FINS:
Plate type aluminum (copper fins optional), die-formed with a sine wave surface.
Each fin has formed self-spacing collars completely covering the tube. The collars automatically and precisely
space the fins in a uniform matter.

CUSTOM AIR HANDLING
UNIT SPECIFICATION
(Sample only - no two custom built units are the same and will contain various components;
verbiage of submittal will change to reflect )
A. GENERAL
As indicated, custom engineered air handling units shall be of the constant volume type as
manufactured by McIntyre Co., San Leandro CA. Units shall employ aluminum material wher-
ever possible (pans, panels, racks, safing, etc.) to reduce over-all unit weight and minimize
facility maintenance requirements while enhancing corrosion resistance. Weights shown
on the drawings may not be exceeded in order to minimize building structural requirements
and reduce rigging weight requirements. Units shall be warranted for twelve (12) months
from start-up or eighteen (18) months from shipment, whichever period expires first.
B. UNIT DESIGN.
The units shall be assembled as one-piece in the unit manufacturers plant. Airflow shall
normally be end-to-end, horizontal draw through, with ductwork in and out as shown on
the drawings. Vertical or combination air patterns are available, when shown on the engi-
neering drawings or schematics. Ductwork shall be by the installing mechanical contrac-
tor. (Multiple piece unit design shall be provided where building or installation constraints
E
require the use of other than one-piece units).
C. BASE FRAME
PL
Each air handling unit over 12 in length shall be constructed on an aluminum structural
base. The perimeter base frame shall be welded 6 channel, nominal 4.0 pounds per foot.
Unit base cross members shall be 4 structural aluminum channels, nominal 2.2 pounds per
foot. Intermediate support members shall be installed under each major component, includ-
ing coils and fans. Galvanized steel or painted carbon steel is not acceptable.
M
The base shall be braced to support internal components without sagging or pulsating. The
floor shall be a minimum of 14ga galvanized or 1/8 aluminum plate, all bolted and sealed
to the inside of the aluminum support framework. Caulked seals or gaskets to guarantee
water tightness shall be provided. The underside of the floor/base pan shall be insulated.
SA
The air handling unit panel casing system shall be built up from the unit base, using a
structural aluminum extrusion framing system as provided by Modular Framing Systems,
Inc. The framing system assembly shall be accomplished using structural members and
mechanical fasteners. (Welding is not necessary and not recommended). Precision die cast
aluminum corners (three-way) joining elements shall be used to connect the perimeter
enclosure-framing (profile) members. Vertical and horizontal wall, roof, and floor supports,
or omega extrusions, shall be incorporated and spaced to enable the finished enclosure
to withstand the system design static pressures as listed on the equipment schedule. The
omega wall, roof, and floor supports shall include a track-way to capture and secure fas-
tener (bolt) heads. Standard aluminum structural angle and channel extrusions are to be
then bolted in place to the omega members to form interior walls and mounting bracket
retainers anchor points.
Structural framing profiles and omega supports shall be formed or extruded from 6063 alloy
T5 temper aluminum as a minimum.
The unit manufacturer shall provide a single wall panel casing system. All panels shall be
single-wall construction with powder coated 16 ga. Electro-Galvanized steel. A nominal 1
thick, 1 1/2 pcf density fiberglass insulation shall be provided inside the wall cavity between
the interior and exterior. Mechanical fasteners such as stainless steel screws or rivets shall
also be employed to secure the housing sheeting to the structural aluminum members.
pcf density fiberglass insulation shall be provided inside the wall cavity between the inte-
rior and exterior housing panel sheets. A thermal break consisting of a double-back tape
or gasket shall be installed between all of the housing sheeting and the structural alumi-
num frames. Mechanical fasteners such as stainless steel screws or rivets shall also be
employed to secure the housing sheeting to the structural aluminum members. Where
shown on the drawings, perforated aluminum liner sheeting may be used in place of solid
insulation liners for acoustical attenuation.
The housing panels shall be installed to seat against the unit pressure, that is, against the
flange of the structural framing system extrusion profiles and omega members.
As an alternate, the manufacturer may use a nominal one (1) or two (2) inch aluminum
laminated panel system, including a thermal insulated core with an nominal 0.024 thick
exterior sheet, finished with a 20 year KYNAR painted finish and a nominal 0.010 thick
interior liner sheet face. The entire panel system shall be non-absorbent, water resistant
with a reinforced polyallomer backing sandwiched under the aluminum sheets over the
polystyrene core. The panel shall have a minimum insulation value of R=4.25, with the
panel meeting a flame spread test as a Class A (ASTM E84).
Panels shall be joined together with a neat and clean appearance. Any safing, internal par-
E
titions, or other tie-ins to the casing shall be made using internal support angle extrusions
or panels that are a part of the casing. Such members may be bolted, screwed, or riveted to
or through the support structure.
PL
Conservative casing/structural design standards as outlined above shall assure the owner
that unit damage (e.g. panel blowouts, collapsing, or buckling) can be avoided due to a
system catastrophic event, such as an inadvertent damper closure.
Each unit section shall have an access door, removable plug panel, or special service feature
SA
for motor removal as outlined. (Coils shall have a removable pull plug panel on the side
of the unit opposite the coil header connections). Through properly designed access, ease
of maintenance, removability of components, unit serviceability shall be assured. Access
doors and removable panels shall be of the same construction as the unit housing panels
above. They shall be guaranteed tight closing by means of a continuous separate gasket
seal around the entire door periphery, to assure a true perpendicular, tight, non-shearing
compression fit.
Each access door shall be mounted with three (3) corrosion resistant fiberglass hinges or
two (2) aluminum hinges to prevent door racking and air leakage. At least two Stainless
Steel turn latches provided per door, spaced at a nominal 12 from the top and bottom of
the door to ensure a tight compression fit.
When a neoprene bubble type door gasket is specified, it shall employ a built-in metal
retainer clip that attaches directly to the resulting door flange. The door gasket shall slide
over the flange via a compression grip and shall not rely on adhesive alone to hold it in
place. The door gasket shall be continuous, and gaps at the 90-degree doorframe corners
shall be avoided to prevent against leakage.
F. ROOF DESIGN
For indoor style units, the entire roof of indoor units shall be a supported flat panel design,
with no standing seams due to the tight clearance requirements of the project. Extruded
aluminum structural members shall provide for roof panel support.
For outdoor design units, the roof panel shall incorporate a enclosure cap to create a
weather tight seal. The roof panel shall turn down over the top outside edge of the wall

aluminum slide-in filter track. Filters shall be the industry standard nominal 24 by 24 or
12 by 24 face dimension to minimize owner re-stocking needs. Filter banks shall be rein-
forced with vertical structural members to assure rigidity. Installation techniques, seal-
ing methods, and structural reinforcement shall eliminate unfiltered air bypass and assure
system cleanliness based on the filter efficiencies specified. Filters shall be removable from
either side of the unit if so specified.
Where specified and shown on the equipment schedule, a high efficiency second stage filter
shall be provided for additional filtration. The second stage filters shall be full size
nominal 12 deep cartridge style elements, of either a 65%, 85% or 95% ASHRAE efficiency
rating. See the equipment schedule for the type of second stage filters, if any, are specified.
E
I. COOLING COILS
Each cooling coil shall be supported by an aluminum or stainless steel structure. This
PL
design shall allow any one coil to be removed through the unit casing, normal to the direc-
tion of air flow, thus reducing maintenance costs and system downtime in the event of
required coil service. One side of this section shall have a removable access panel for flex-
ibility and ease of maintenance.
Cooling coils shall be of the chilled water type, nominal 5/8 tube diameter, all copper
M
tubes, with a 0.020 minimum thick tube wall. Coil fins shall be plate type aluminum fins,
nominal 0.006 thick. Coil tubes shall be mechanically expanded into the aluminum fins.
Optional materials and or coatings can be provided as specified. Unit coil connections shall
be extended out through the unit casing with a male pipe thread connection for ease of con-
SA
