that was coming while Ms Jamela rehearsed solo.
d) She will succeed against the noise that was created when 20 students
practiced daily during music class as prescription does not operate

P1. The decision to include Iran in international talks on Syrias future means
that all the major foreign players will sit together for the first time to consider a
political resolution of the war, which has killed more than 250,000 people and
caused millions more to flee the country.
The United States, Russia and Europe failed at earlier efforts to reach a
negotiated end to Syrias civil war, which has raged since 2011, and created
such chaos that the murderous Islamic State has been able to seize vast swaths
of territory. There are many reasons for that failure, chiefly Russias obstinacy,
but one is the refusal to include Iran, which with Moscow provides vital support
for President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.
Initially, the exclusion made sense. The United States, which does not have
formal diplomatic relations with Iran, was mainly preoccupied as were other
major Western powers with reaching an agreement with Iran on nuclear
weapons. With that deal done, there is every reason to engage Iran on Syria,
especially since Russias recent military intervention on the side of Mr. Assad
has vastly complicated the conflict and added new urgency to the need for a
political solution.
Not everyone will be happy to see Iran at the table. Saudi Arabia, deeply
suspicious of Irans regional ambitions, argues that negotiating with Iran only
legitimizes a government that is exerting malign influence in Iraq, Lebanon,
Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. The Saudis, who are Sunnis, fought especially hard

to keep Shiite Iran, its main regional rival, from the Vienna meeting and it took
a trip to Riyadh on Saturday by Secretary of State John Kerry and a phone call
on Tuesday by President Obama to Saudi King Salman to win them over.
The Saudis want Mr. Assad removed from power and the Iranians removed
from any post-Assad Syria. They have reportedly tried to enlist President
Vladimir Putin of Russia in these objectives with offers of assistance for
Russias battered economy. Mr. Putin reportedly told the Saudis that he agreed
that Irans role in Syria is too big, but that he could not guarantee Mr. Assads
removal.
Given the mixed messages, no one knows yet what Iran will do, but it has a
chance to make a difference in Syria. Its involvement in Vienna will be a test of
whether it intends to play a constructive role in the region and in ending Mr.
Assads brutal war.

P2. In an effort to find out how ocean mass affects tectonic plates, a team of
German scientists has recently taken on one of the most difficult sets of
measurements possible in nature, namely to determine how much the sea
weighs. Unlike calculating variations in sea levels, which is relatively simple,
finding out the mass of the water is far more complex, as a large number of
factors contribute to changes in this number.
Additionally, the oceans are not static, as in ideal models, so the number varies
considerably over short time frames.

The two main elements that a scientist needs to know in order to calculate the
mass of the ocean are the topography of its bottom and also the height of the sea
level. There are, however, other elements at work as well, such as temperature
and the salt content. Water expands when heated. Warm water, thus, weighs less
than the same quantity of cold water.
We combined these data with numerical models of the ocean. In this way we
were able to prove, for the first time, that in particular in the higher latitudes,
significant fluctuations of the water mass occur and that this takes place within
a time period of only one to two weeks, Dr. Kusche writes
