Course Objectives

On the completion of the course, students will be able to:


Discuss the importance of impurities in pharmaceutical materials.
Study the method of manufacturing, physical/chemical properties, assay, storage and
uses of important inorganic substances used for pharmaceutical purpose.
Study biological role of inorganic ions and its involvement in various diseases.
Study basic analytical methods for pharmaceutical inorganic substances.
Study various aspects of radioactivity, its diagnostics as well as therapeutic usefulness and
harmful effects in environment.

Section-I

1 Introduction to inorganic chemistry and pharmacopoeia 02


2 Impurities in Pharmaceuticals: 05
Sources, tests for purity, identity, limit tests for iron, arsenic, lead,
chloride, sulfate.

3 An outline of method of preparation, uses, special tests if any, of the 12


following class of inorganic pharmaceuticals included in the current
pharmacopoeia:
Acids and Bases: Buffers, Waters
Gastrointestinal agents: Acidifying agents, Antacids, Protective and
Adsorbents, Cathartics.
Major intra and extra-cellular electrolytes: physiological ions, Electrolytes
used for replacement therapy, acids-base balance and combination
therapy.
Essential and trace elements: Transition elements and their compounds
of pharmaceutical importance: Iron and haematinics, minerals
supplements.

4 Inorganic Radio pharmaceuticals: 03


Nuclear radiopharmaceuticals, reactions, Nomenclature, Methods of
obtaining their standards and units of activity, measurements of activity,
clinical applications and dosage, hazards and precautions.

5 An outline of method of preparation, uses, special tests if any, of the 12


following class of inorganic pharmaceuticals included in the current
pharmacopoeia:
Topical agents: Protective, Astringents and Anti-infectives.
Gases and Vapors: Oxygen, Anesthetics & Respiratory Stimulants.
Dental products: Dentifrices, Anti-caries agents
Complexing and Chelating agents used in therapy.

Sclerosing agents, Expectorants, Emetics, Poisons & Anti-dotes, Sedatives

7 Pharmaceutical Aids used in pharmaceutical industry: 05


Anti-oxidants, Preservatives, Filter aids, Adsorbents, Diluents.

Inorganic Chemistry (Practical)

1. Qualitative analysis of Inorganic mixture of up to 4 radicals. Six mixtures to be analyzed,


preferably by semi-micro methods.
2. All identification tests for pharmacopoeial inorganic pharmaceuticals and qualitative
tests for cations and anions should be covered.
3. Limit tests for Cl, SO4, As, Heavy metals and Lead along with a Few modifications.
4. Volumetric Analysis of few important compounds covered in theory.

5. Other practical covering syllabus aspects.

Instructional Method and Pedagogy:

Lectures will be conducted with the aid of multi-media projector, black board, OHP etc.
Assignments based on course content will be given to the students at the end of each
unit/topic and will be evaluated at regular interval.
Specific discussion questions will be assigned each week.
