Because of the various levels of student proficiency and the multiple points of entry and exit from Californias language programs, the
content standards that follow are not tied to specific grade levels; instead, they describe the stages of linguistic and cultural acquisition.
The standards are separated into five categories: Content, Communication, Cultures, Structures, and Settings. The categories should be
taught together and, in practice, merge into seamless instruction within the various stages of the Language Learning Continuum.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
1. The act of reading a book, in any language, encompasses more than just entertainment. To fully understand a book, students must contextualize it. This
can be achieved with different lenses or points of view.
2. Understanding a text also makes them culturally and globally aware. Students not only delve into learning Spanish, but they also get involved with
History, Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and Writing.
3. At the end they will derive some meaning that can be used in the future. This may be a better understanding of Literature and how it is influenced by
society.
4. Students will be better researchers and better critical thinkers with this interdisciplinary approach. They will also practice their writing skills through
this exercises, taking important notes while reading, and expanding their vocabulary.

Unit Summary:
What secrets are contained in words? Are short stories a treasure box of meaning(s)? Through the reading of Julio Cortzars La noche boca arriba students will
try to unlock the meaning of lo fantstico in short stories and how the author is influenced by society and the worldview of the time. This unit allows the
students to conduct research in collaboration with peers. It also permits a better understanding of the text through brief summaries and looking up new
vocabulary in Spanish and Spanish/English online dictionaries. Students will also analyze the text and think critically about a particular viewpoint and then
share that with the rest of the class. In addition, students will question and create a dialogue with the text, enriching the literary experience. Digital devices will
be utilized to conduct research, write summaries, make presentations, and view media.
