The tonic (I-chord)


The tonic or the I-chord is the home. This is usually where we start and where we end -- but
there are of course exceptions from this. I am often using a journey as metaphor for how a
song is composed. If you just stay at home, you do not have much of a journey. But you can
of course have a nice day at home or in your garden.
There are songs that just stay on one chord, without any harmonic movement. But it does
not make much sense to spend much time on these songs in a series on progressions - as
these song don't have any progression. You will find more about the tonic / I-chord with
examples on how it works in a musical context in the section on individual progressions.
