Sooner or later, we all have to talk about the birds and the bees.

Join Amanda Dillon, Field Ecologist for the Albany Pine

Bush Preserve for a lunch talk about the birds and the bees (of
the Albany Pine Bush!) on Friday, August 11th from 12:00 noon
until 1:00 p.m. Dillon will describe efforts to study and protect the
wildlife and insects that live in Albanys globally-rare inland pine bar-
rens ecosystem.

The Albany Pine Bush is an inland pitch pine scrub oak barrens. This inland pine barrens habitat is similar
to coastal pine barrens found in New Jersey, Cape Cod and Long Island. There are fewer than 20 examples of
this habitat in the world, and this is one of the best that remains. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission
was created in 1988 by the NYS Legislature to protect and manage the Albany Pine Bush and provide the pub-
lic with educational and recreational opportunities.

Growing up in farm country in northern central New York, Dillon has always been an outdoors girl, catching sal-
amanders and collecting cicada skins. Her love of nature carried over into her career when she earned a Bache-
lors of Science degree in Natural History and Interpretation and a Masters of Science degree in Entomology.
As both an ecologist and educator at the preserve, Dillon gets to marry her two favorite things in life: learning
about the natural world and sharing that knowledge with others.

The Club will serve a hot and cold buffet starting at noon with the program commencing at 12:30, followed by
a questions and answer session. The cost for the luncheon and talk is $20. Reservations are required by
Wednesday, August 9 and may be made by prepaying online at www.universityclubalbany.com, by calling
the Club at 518-463-1151 or by sending an e-mail to ellen@universityclubalbany.com.

This event is presented by the University Club of Albany Foundation, Inc. Support for educational pro-
gramming is provided by AT&T.
