Schedule: Each week, the learning unit (or weekly unit) runs from Monday through the following
Tuesday. The new week will open at 8am EST/EDT on Mondays. Most assignments (quizzes,
discussion postings or other assignments) in the Weekly Directions are due by the following Tuesday
1159pm unless otherwise specified. Your graded assignments will be returned to you within 1-3
weeks after the due date. *All other deadlines are as noted in Appendix A Course Calendar and
Topics.

Workload: The workload for this course includes heavy readings, searching, thinking and writing.
You should expect to spend 9-12 hours on average per week for the course work. If you read slowly
or have difficulty writing/typing, you may need more time to complete the course tasks. You are also
responsible to check the course in Blackboard multiple times or at least 3 times each week to stay up
on discussion group work, announcements, and the course email, please make sure and check your
emails.

Readings: Learning to use the library resources is as crucial for your graduate success AND for your
continued success as a masters prepared nurse as learning to read the research articles you find. All
article readings will be posted as references so you can find them in our library network system.
Remember to use the KSU Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) before you connect to the library from
your home computer.

Communication: Use the Course Messages inside the Blackboard course to reach me for most
communication. My Kent email and phone number(s) (on the syllabus) should be your next best way
to contact me. Please refrain from texting unless it is an emergency. It is much better to write an
email or call. Texting is not professional and should not be used to get in touch with faculty. I am
available all week and will respond within 24 hours during the week and 48 hours on the weekend.
Please keep me informed of issues or problems that may impact your performance.

Attendance: Timely completion of all required course assignments and evaluation methods in an
online course is considered "attendance. Therefore, failure to complete any assignment or
chronically late assignments can result in course failure. Please read the university policy on
attendance and what constitutes an acceptable excuse.

Graduate Program Syllabus 6

Kent State University College of Nursing
NURS70650 (Term: Summer 2017)

Assignments: You will complete individual assignments but are expected to be active in the
discussions or any group activity. Your contributions and participation in these group activities will
be graded individually. All assignments must be submitted through Blackboard by the due date.
Please see Appendix C for the details and instructions for the assignments.

Midterm/Final: There will be 2 tests throughout the semester, one midterm and one final. The
midterm will cover material in weeks 1-4 and the final will cover material in weeks 5-9. Each
test will open on Sunday morning and stay open until Tuesday night at the end of the module week.
You will have 50 minutes to complete each test each of which is worth 50 points. Each test evaluates
what and how well you have self-learned from the weekly lectures, activities and assigned readings.
ALL exams must be completed or a 5% penalty will be applied to your total final exam grade. All
exams are open book, open note. All exams must be completed by the due date and time in the
course schedule, no exceptions.

Late or Missed Assignments: If any assignment is omitted or turned in late, a grade of zero may be
given for that task or a penalty applied at the instructors discretion. No makeup exams if an exam is
missed except with prior arrangement. Please note, there are no extra credit assignments or make-up
activities to boost your course grade.
