Lesson Plan in English

Vowels

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

a) recognize the difference between the short A sound and the long A sound;
b) color a picture according to the short A sound and long A sound sound in each word;
c) work collaboratively in group activities.

II. Subject matter:

a) Topic: Vowels
b) Materials:
- Apples, paper, candles, stuffed animals, hat, and other words that contain a short and long
A sound
- Interactive game at https://www.education.com/game/rhyming-words-match-up/

III. Procedure:

A. Preparatory

1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
4. Motivation: The A Song
Play a YouTube video entitled, Phonics Letter A Song. Have the kids listen to the
song, and then let them sing along.

B. Lesson Proper

a. Activity:

Divide the class into groups with 4 members each. Provide each group with at least 4
flash cards with pictures of things that start with the letter A. Instruct each group to discuss
which among these materials have names that has the short A or the long A vowel sound. Have
them present their answers afterwards.

b. Analysis:

- After the group discussion, ask 3 representatives from the group to paste their
answers on the board under the column of the sound they correspond to.
- Let the remaining 1 representative pronounce their assigned words out loud to the
entire class.
- Ask the students what they think about the activity.

c. Abstraction

- Proceed with the discussion on the words with the short A sound and long A sound by grouping
the words according to their sounds.

d. Application

- The students will read the story entitled, Hats and Caps. Ask the students to get a piece of
paper and divide it into two. Have them list down the words with the short A sound and long A
sound by grouping the words according to their sounds.

V. Assignment

- Ask the students to draw at least 2 images of words that have short A sound and long A sound.
The images must be colored suitably.
