IMPROVEMENTS 2013

17/07/2015 Presentation Title 15

FEEDBACK OF STAKEHOLDERS
TV: likes the solos, the product is very television friendly
but it seems to be too long.

Spectators: They enjoy to see the couples performing by

their own but 30 dances is even for them too long

Couples: They agree with the format of solos but they

miss the fight of group dances

17/07/2015 Presentation Title Slide 16

Goals
Goal 1: Make it shorter, to satisfy spectators and TV

Goal 2: Have group dances to show the fight between

couples

Goal 3: Have solo dances to give spectators and TV a

chance to focus on one couple

Goal 4: keep on going to implement new judging system

in solo and group dances

17/07/2015 World Batton Twirling Meeting 17

POSSIBILITIES
A: 5 Solo Dances: ~50 Minutes

B: 3 Solo Dances including 3 Group dances at the end +

REVISED: NEW FORMAT
Version C (3 Solo, 2 Group) meets all goals:

Time reduced to just about half an hour

Group AND Solo dances
New judging system in use for solo AND group dance

17/07/2015 Presentation Title Slide 19

IMPLEMENTATION
4 Criterias, 12 Judges, 3 Judges per Criteria /
Component
Mapping Judge to Criteria/Components will be
randomly selected for each couple and dance
New Judging System can also be applied even with 6-8
couples on the floor at the same time. Adjudicators will
judge only one criteria/component at the time.

GOALS 2014
optimize calculation system

Spreading out the system world-wide to the member

bodies

Introducing the judging system to formation dance sport

Spreading out usage to World and Continental

Championships

IMPROVEMENTS 2014 - MEDIAN

17/07/2015 Presentation Title 22

OPTIMIZE CALCULATION SYSTEM
Goal: reduce influence of false Judgements

What we see:
10 to couple of own country or team
7.5 to rival of own couple
Etc.

Today, the best and worse mark have a weight of 50%.

The goal is to minimize this

Version 28042013, 17/07/2015 New Judging System 2.0 Slide 23

DISTANCE BASED WEIGHT
The weight of best / worst mark should be depending on
the distance to the median
Example: Judgements: 7.0, 7.5, 9.5 -> Distance of best
(9.5) is 2 to the median (7.5)

Today: Constant Tomorrow: Non linear to distance

Weight Weight
100% 100%

50% 50%

Version 2 vs. Version 2014 shows no changes in places but some points
change.

Version 28042013, 17/07/2015 New Judging System 2.0 Slide 25

What changed the result of Couple #4?
As an example: Marking of Slow Waltz
9,5 10 9,5 9,5 10 9,5 9 8 9,5 9,5 9 9,5

Influence of false 8 is now much lower because of a high distance to 9,5

What changed the result of Couple #25?

As an example: Marking of Viennes Waltz
8,5 7,5 7,5 8,5 8 7,5 9 8 7 8 7,5 7,5
Influence of false 9 is now much lower because of a high distance to 7,5

Version 28042013, 17/07/2015 New Judging System 2.0 Slide 26

MEDIAN IMPROVEMENTS
New distance based weight is not expecting to change
significant places. But this is not our goal anyway!

More fair as influence of politically motivated

judgements is reduced.

A step towards the right direction
