Section Three: Teacher Candidate Artifacts

Introduction

In this section, you will be able to view my teaching skills and evidence that I have

created throughout my educational experiences. The artifacts I have included, will demonstrate

my preparedness to plan and teach effectively in the classroom. The variety of artifacts will also

demonstrate my ability to assess student learning, integrate the use of technology, accommodate

a variety of learners, maintain classroom management, be culturally responsive to my students

and maintain the professional standards in each grade level. I inserted artifacts for multiple

subjects, to ensure my capabilities to plan, teach and assess in all aspects of the learning

curriculum. As a teacher, I believe it is so important to create engaging lessons, but also to be

creative and set up accommodations for all students to have equal opportunity to learn the

material. I make sure to include extra materials, worksheets, written note cards and activities to

make sure all students are engaged, active and able to participate. I also have included a re-

engagement activity I designed, when the original lesson didnt go as planned. This

demonstrates my ability to quickly assess students, and create an additional activity for when my

lesson was not successful the first time.

The first artifact I have included is a Family Tree lesson. It allows each student to learn

and discover about their own families, which demonstrates my abilities to be culturally

responsive to my learners. They are able to create their own projects, and share with the class if

they desire. My second artifact was a rubric to go with the Family Tree lesson, in which I created

to grade the students on their projects. This demonstrates my abilities to assess the learning, and

create a document to calculate points and a grade. My next artifact, is an Opinion Writing lesson,

which I took from a Unit Plan to help guide students into writing a final Opinion piece. I created
the lesson to help students organize their thoughts before writing a full paper. This lesson

demonstrates my ability to use scaffolding with my students, as well as teach them a life skill of

forming a respectful opinion, in which they can use through adulthood. The next artifact you

will find, is a re-engagement lesson I created for a spelling unit. During my student teaching

placement, my students had weekly spelling tests, and I noticed they were doing poorly on them.

I decided to create a spelling word sentence worksheet, so they could see their words, and use

them in a sentence to help them recall the words better. I used sentences that were relatable to the

students, and they were very successful on their tests after using this technique. This worksheet

shows my capabilities of informally assessing, and re-engaging the learning differently when the

original lessons are not as successful the first time. I think it is very realistic to have lessons not

be successful in the classroom, and as a teacher, I do not want that to discourage me. Instead of

continuing with my lesson, and disregarding my learners, I chose to re-evaluate my lesson and

come back with a re-engagement activity to make sure my learners were successful.

The next artifact you will see, is a Unit Test for Social studies on the American

Revolution. I created a final assessment test in order to formally assess the students learning

throughout the unit. I created a test that had a variety of choices, written answers and matching

which shows my ability to create a formal assessment. It also allows me to show the different

ways I am able to collect data, analyze my students and re-engage if necessary. Another artifact I

have included is a science Life Cycle Lesson, in which includes a literacy lesson as well as

science. It is a cross-connected lesson and I was able to create a fun lesson for students to learn

in two different subjects. It has a hands on learning activity, a listening activity as well as writing

as reading. This demonstrates my culturally responsive needs are met within the classroom, and I

am accommodating all of my learning needs while teaching. I integrated technology as well, to

really get the well-rounded learning experience for this lesson. One other artifact I have included,

is a Finding the Main idea lesson plan in which I use more scaffolding and re-visiting prior

learning to guide students to find the main idea of a story. I demonstrate my accommodating

needs by including a Main Idea Map, using anchor charts, group and individual work. This

ensures all learners are engaged and able to participate at their own pace, and style. This lesson

was literacy based, in discovering the main idea of a passage, but I used the students Social

Studies unit for the reading. This shows how I am able to connect the subjects, and encourage

more retention from the units by reiterating the material into different subjects. The next artifact

included is a Power Point presentation, on Celebrations Around the World. I created this

presentation for a younger classroom, and to introduce cultures and celebrations. I think it is so

important to teach students about different cultures and traditions that they are familiar and

unfamiliar with. It creates a more open and accepting atmosphere in the classroom, so students

are not afraid to ask questions or feel out of place if they have cultural differences. Teaching

culture is fun and engaging, and also brings the classroom together as a whole. In any given

classroom, there are so many different cultures, religions, and traditions that children may follow

at home. I want to encourage my classrooms to learn more about each other and be accepting of

everyone, regardless of their diversity or culture. It also helps me as an educator, to be better at

knowing my students and families, in order to keep positive communication and relationships.

My last artifact included in this section is a lesson on Letter Writing. I created this lesson to

encourage students to practice their writing skills, and to teach them a skill they can use for the

rest of their lives. I thought this artifact was important to include, because of our over-

stimulating and technologically advanced society, students are not drawn to this lesson at first. It

was very engaging for them to pick who they would write a letter to, and what they wanted to
write about. Giving students a choice, is helpful for the culturally responsive needs, as well as

keeping them engaged. Their final product was a fully written letter to whomever they chose. I

also had them bring in addresses, so we could learn how to address the letters, stamp them and

send them to their recipients. It was a literacy skill, as well as a fun life skill they can use in the

future.

Artifacts & Rationales

All of my artifacts included in this section will give you examples of different subjects,

lessons, learning techniques, ability to use technology, integrating multiple different materials

into tasks and my ability to demonstrate my teaching skills. I am fully prepared to plan for the

learning, teach the material, accommodate all learning needs, be culturally responsive, assess the

learning and analyze myself as well as my students for further needed instruction. I believe that

these artifacts display my mastery of instructional knowledge and skills that a highly effective

teacher should possess. I believe in developing lessons that create a well-rounded learning

experience. I hope you will see how well I am prepared to become an effective educator, based

on my many different artifacts found below.
