La radiacin directa que recibe una superficie depende del ngulo de incidencia de los rayos
solares. La radiacin difusa recibida por la superficie inclinada no depende de la orientacin del
plano y no viene de la totalidad de la bveda del cielo o la tierra cercana - se trata slo de la
parte del cielo que la superficie "ve". Por lo tanto, para el clculo de la radiacin solar sobre una
superficie inclinada, un factor de conversin debe tenerse en cuenta para cada uno de los
componentes [1].

Figura 4.3 muestra la irradiacin diaria al promedio mensual recibida por Sur frente a las
superficies de varias inclinaciones[10]. Estos valores se refieren a la latitud 38 N, = 0.2 y son
aproximados. Sin embargo, estos proporcionan un cuadro completo de la influencia de la
vertiente en la irradiacin solar recibida por una superficie. Esta cifra confirma la regla
mencionada anteriormente.
Se sabe que el ngulo de inclinacin del panel PV en gran medida determina la irradiancia solar
recibida y es el factor principal que regula la potencia del panel. Como la posicin del sol sobre
la esfera celeste cambia durante el da y sigue un camino diferente por cada da del ao, es
evidente que la determinacin de un ngulo de inclinacin ptimo es esencial para el ptimo
funcionamiento de cada sistema del PV.
Para ilustrar el efecto de la inclinacin de un panel fotovoltaico a la salida de energa elctrica,
se realiz un experimento en un momento especfico, en la maana de un da en Atenas [11]. La
potencia del panel fotovoltaico fue 55 Wp, su orientacin sur y la inclinacin de los ngulos
fueron elegidos para cambiar de 0 a 90 en un intervalo de 10. Los resultados experimentales
se representan grficamente en la figura 4.4. Como puede verse en esta figura, el ngulo de
inclinacin ptimo es alrededor de 60. Ms all del ngulo de inclinacin ptimo, la potencia
de salida cae poco a poco. El ngulo de inclinacin ptimo del ejemplo mostrado en la figura 4.4
es alta ya que es maana (10:34), as la altitud solar es baja.

Otro factor que afecta el incidente de la radiacin solar sobre una superficie es la orientacin de
la superficie. Teniendo en cuenta que la radiacin solar es simtrica al medioda solar, entonces
la mejor orientacin para un panel solar fijo es el sur ( = 0). Desviaciones del ngulo acimut por
10 o 20 este o al oeste del Sur tendr poca influencia en la energa solar anual recopilada. La
orientacin de un panel fotovoltaico tiene tambin un efecto en el tiempo que va a recibir la
radiacin solar. Por ejemplo, un panel solar ubicado en el sureste recibir la mayor cantidad de
radiacin solar por la maana.
Figura 4.5 muestra el promedio mensual diario de irradiacin sobre la horizontal y cuatro
superficies verticales (sur, este, norte y oeste) en latitud 38o N [10]. Una caracterstica que
muestra esta figura es que todas las curvas excepto que del Sur frente a la superficie tienen un
mximo que corresponde el solsticio de verano, mientras que el sur frente a la superficie tiene
dos mximos que corresponden a la primavera y el equinoccio de otoo. Adems, se aprecia
que la superficie vertical con orientacin sur recibir grandes cantidades de radiacin solar
durante los meses de invierno, mientras que la superficie horizontal predomina durante los
meses de verano.

Para una descripcin ms detallada, empecemos con la curva que representa la irradiacin solar
sobre la superficie vertical orientada al norte. Durante los meses de invierno, el sol sale y se
pone al sur de la lnea este-oeste y por lo tanto no es cualquier irradiacin solar directa en esta
superficie. Por el contrario, durante los meses de verano, debido a la longitud ms larga del da,
una pequea cantidad de radiacin solar cae sobre esta superficie.
Las curvas que representan la irradiacin solar sobre superficie orientada al este y oeste vertical
tienen valores mayores que el de orientacin norte superficie vertical. Durante los meses de
verano el sol se levanta y al norte de la lnea este-oeste, el camino aparente del sol es ms largo
y por lo tanto, la irradiacin solar incidente en estas superficies es mayor que el de orientacin
norte superficie vertical.
La superficie horizontal recibe mucha ms radiacin en verano debido a la altitud solar se
maximiza.
La curva que representa la irradiacin solar vertical Sur frente a la superficie tiene una forma
completamente diferente en comparacin con las otras curvas. Los dos valores mximos
corresponden a la primavera y el equinoccio de otoo. Durante los meses de invierno, debido a
la baja altitud solar, esta superficie recibe la mayor cantidad de irradiacin solar. La
combinacin de baja altitud solar con la longitud del da corto durante el invierno da los
resultados de la superioridad de la superficie orientada al sur en comparacin con las otras
orientaciones.
La regla emprica mencionada anteriormente para la inclinacin de un panel fijo da buenos
resultados cuando se aplica en pequeas instalaciones de energa solar. Sin embargo, en el caso
de grandes instalaciones solares, incluso un ligero cambio en la pendiente corresponde a un
gran cambio en la radiacin incidente. Adems, con sistemas fotovoltaicos donde es alto el
costo de los paneles solares, es necesario estudiar la pendiente ptima para cada aplicacin
particular. Por ejemplo, si los paneles fotovoltaicos se utilizar un sistema de conexin a red
que sigue siendo funcional durante todo el ao, la pendiente ptima se calcular con el
incidente de mxima irradiacin solar en los paneles tomando en consideracin el ao entero.
Este ngulo ptimo del panel es generalmente cerca del ngulo de latitud. Sin embargo, en el
caso de un sistema fotovoltaico autnomo con bateras como un almacenamiento de energa,
el criterio no puede ser la irradiacin solar total, sino la irradiacin diaria durante el mes con la
irradiacin solar siendo menos, para reducir al mnimo los requisitos de almacenamiento de
energa. Por ejemplo, en el hemisferio norte, diciembre se considera ser el mes con la
irradiacin ms baja, por lo que el ngulo del panel ser mayor que el ngulo de latitud.
Generalmente, la pendiente de panel ptimo debe determinarse por la latitud de la
localizacin, la aplicacin prevista y el perodo de tiempo que el sistema solar est destinado a
ser utilizado.
