Math

Math is challenging in 6th grade. We will be using a textbook published by McGraw Hill for
middle grades, which is closely aligned with the California State Standards. This curriculum
includes such topics as: pre-algebra (variables and equations), integers, decimals, fractions,
geometry concepts, ratios/proportions, and problem solving. It is imperative that students know
their basic facts for all four operations, as they must demonstrate grade level proficiency through
timed drills. We will cover one chapter per month with the district proficiency administered each
trimester. Students will have online access with http://connected.mcgraw-
hill.com/connected/login.do
Language Arts
We use a newly adopted curriculum that is aligned with California State Standards called
Wonders by McGraw Hill. It is a comprehensive program that incorporates reading, writing,
grammar, and spelling. It consists of 6 week reading units focusing on a variety of skills and
strategies that follow state standards. Students will write summaries, answer comprehension
questions, and define vocabulary words with each literature selection. There will be weekly
spelling lists, spelling activities and worksheets, and vocabulary development with tests on
Friday, along with grammar lessons and daily language practice. Students will have online
access with http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do

Reading
In addition to in-class reading, students are required to read 30 minutes nightly at home for the
District Independent reading requirement. Weekly reading logs are due every Tuesday. Students
are required to read books from the AR list and take a test on the computer when finished
reading the book. The point value requirement for 6th grade will be 25 points per trimester.
There will be goals set throughout the trimester to ensure that the points are achieved. The same
book can be used to fulfill both the nightly reading and AR requirements.
Benchmarks- Students will be expected to meet AR Benchmarks at the half way point (12.5)
and end of each trimester (25 points).

You may look up Accelerated Reader book levels and points by using the AR Book Finder
website below. Simply enter the link below, type in the book title and the Accelerated Reader
book information will appear: http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx

Writing
Sixth graders are required to write essays using the complete writing process of pre-writing,
drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing. We will focus on argumentative,
informative/explanatory, and narrative writing Students must demonstrate grade-level
competencies in each of these writing domains (one per trimester). Writing across the curriculum
will include research reports in Social Studies, Science and Health. We will also have quick
writes and journal topics to respond to.
Social Studies
We will focus on the study of world geography, archaeology, and ancient civilizations of
Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel, India, Greece, and Rome. Assignments will include textbook
questions and vocabulary, individual research, and cooperative learning activities. Note taking
will be important when studying for tests. There will be two research reports that will include a
project and presentation.
Science/Health
We will focus on the Next Generation Science Standards. As scholars work through the Science
Scopes, they will be following the engineering process: ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve.
The scopes (units) this year are the following: The water cycle, influences on weather and
climate, energy and transfer, what is a cell, anatomy of a cell, and bodies & systems. In Health
we will study topics such as nutrition and drug use.

Physical Education
Our program will include calisthenics, aerobic activities and various games from the Game Day
curriculum. The games will stress skills and cooperation over competition. We will have
Physical Education in all weather except rain, excessive heat, and bad air days. Students need to
dress comfortably and have safe, appropriate shoes. Physical Education attire should not interfere
with any activity. The mile will be ran weekly. Girls need to wear shorts under dresses or skirts.
Students are graded on effort, attitude, and sportsmanship, not athletic ability.

Homework/Organization
In sixth grade, the district-adopted amount of homework is 45-60 minutes per night, or an
average of about 300 minutes per week. This will vary per individual student, with some
finishing sooner and some later. Dont forget the 30-minute independent reading requirement
mentioned above, which is in addition to homework time. We assign homework every
night. Weekend homework often consists of working on an ongoing project such as a research
report or book report. Students will be required to complete a Daily Assignment Agenda for each
subject area. Please consult Student Agendas if you have questions about homework. Students
will need to spend their recess making up any missing assignments and then complete a missing
assignment slip form.
Progress Reports and Grading
Scholars are responsible for earning their grades. We use a standard percentage system, with
assignments given a point value. Progress reports, listing missing assignments and grades earned
will be sent home bi-monthly. Grades will also be available through parent connect any time. See
first day packet on how to sign up. You will be able to see current grades and any missing
assignments. Late work will be accepted with 20% off after a red late slip form (with explanation
on why it was late) attached to late assignment. Make-up work after absences will be given full
credit. Students are allowed two make-up days for each day absent. If you are aware of days your
student will be missing please encourage them to be proactive in retrieving their assignments
ahead of time. Your help in encouraging your student to turn in all assignments, on time, is
greatly appreciated.
Devices/Tablets
The students will be given back their devices within the first two weeks of school. Once they
have been retrieved they are cared for and students are required to having them charged to the
fullest daily. This is to secure your student will be able to participate and achieve their learning
to the greatest measure.
Discipline
We use an assertive discipline approach, with consequences (recess detention, copying Student
Behavior Responsibilities, infractions, and/or after school detention) as needed for inappropriate
behavior. I hold a high expectation of respect in my classroom. Inappropriate language will not
be tolerated at any time; this includes profanity and other words that are offensive and
disrespectful. Disruptive behavior will result in immediate consequences. We expect our sixth
graders to be individually accountable for their actions. This will allow you to receive updates on
your childs progress / behavior in class. Remind allows you to send messages through text
message as well as receive responses and updates regarding what is going on in class.

Consequences
1st: Verbal Warning
2nd: Violation + Warning
3rd: Violation + 30 min. detention
4th: Violation + 60 min. detention
5th: Infraction/Referral to VP/Saturday School
