Music Activity

Learning Objectives:
To demonstrate an understanding of numbers and counting

Development activity promotes:


Exploration, discovery, and problem solving
Mathematical thinking

Materials Needed:
Flannel board
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (song)
5 monkey pieces (all pieces laminated and velcro on the back)
Doctor
Mom
Bed
Numbers 1-5

Procedure:

Invite children to sit down on the carpet in circle time.

Ask children while pointing to the pieces of the felt board song, what are the pieces.

Introduce the name of the felt board song, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.

Tell them that we will be singing it together.

While singing, take each piece you sing about off the felt board as you go.

When finished singing put felt board pieces back on the felt board.
Preparation/ Set up:
Five Little Monkeys jumping on the Bed (laminated pieces) cut out/Velcro back pieces
Have flannel board out

Motivation/ Introduction:
Introduce the topic of asking the children have you ever seen a monkey? Where? What was it
doing? Show pictures of monkeys of monkeys to the children and ask them what amazing things
can monkeys do? What amazing things can kids do? How are monkeys and kids alike and
different?

Follow up reflection/evaluation:

Printout monkey stick puppets and take turn giving 5 children a stick puppet and have them jump
and then request certain students to fall. Then ask the class how many monkeys are still on the
bed. For a whole group activity, stamp the kids fingers to draw monkeys on them. Have the
children fold a finger down every time a monkey jumps off the bed.

Evaluation: The children was able to count and recognize the numbers 1-5 and reenact the song
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.
