QUESTION WITH ANSWER

1. Define pitch curve of the cam.

The path generated by the trace point at the follower is rotated about a stationary cam.
i.e., by holding the cam fixed and rotating the follower in a direction opposite to that of cam,
then the curve generated by the locus of the trace point is called the pitch curve is known as
radial follower.

2. Define pressure angle.

Pressure angle represents the included angle at any point on the pitch curve between
the line of motion of follower and normal to that point on the cam profile. This angle is of great
importance in designing the cam profiles.

3. Define (a) Module (b) Diametral Pitch of gears.

Module (m): is the ratio of pitch diameter to the number of teeth on the gear. m = D/T,
where D- pitch circle diameter, T no of teeth

Diametrical Pitch: It is the number of teeth per unit pitch circle. = T/D
4. Define I) path of contact. II) Length of path of contact

Path of contact: It is the path traced by the point of contact of two teeth from
the beginning to the end of engagement.
Length of path of contact: It is the length of common normal cut- off by
the addendum circles of the wheel and pinion.
5. What is meant by Angle of dwell& contact ratio?

It is the angle through which the cam rotates while the follower remains stationary at the
highest or the lowest.
It is defined as average number of pairs of teeth which are in contact. It is the ratio of
length of arc of contact to circular pitch.

PART B

6(A) A disc cam used for a knife edge follower with simple harmonic motion during lift and
uniform acceleration and retardation motion during return rotes in clockwise direction at
300 rpm.The line of motion of the follower has an offset 10 mm to right of cam shaft axis.
The minimum radius of the cam is 30 mm the line of the follower is 40 mm.The cam
rotation angles are: Lift 600, dwell 900, return 1200 and remaining angle for dwell. Draw he
cam profile and

determine the
maximum velocity
and acceleration
during lift and
return.
6.(B) It is required to set out of the profile of a cam to give the following motion to the
reciprocating follower with a flat mushroom contact face.

(i) Follower to have a stroke of 20 mm during 1200 of cam rotation

(ii) Follower to dwell for 300 of cam rotation

(iii) Follower to return to its initial position during 1200 of cam rotation and

(iv) Follower to dwell for remaining 900 of cam rotation.

The minimum radius of the cam is 25 mm.The outstroke of the follower is performed with
SHM and return stroke with equal uniform acceleration and retardation. Draw the profile
of the cam.
7.(A) Two mating gears have 20 and 40 in volute teeth of module 10 mm and 200 pressure
angle. The addendum on each wheel is to be made of such a length that the line of contact
on each side of the pitch point has half the maximum possible length. Determine

(i) The addendum height for each gear wheel

(ii) The length of path of contact

(iii) The length of arc of contact

(iv) The contact ratio.

7(B) A compound gear train using spur gear is required to give a total reduction ratio of
250 to 1 in four steps. The modules of the gears are 5 mm for the first step,7mm for the
second,10 mm for the third and 16 mm for the fourth

(i) Arrive at the individual speed ratios, if the tolerance of + or 0.2% is allowed in the
total reduction ratio
(ii) Find the numbers of teeth of all gears if the minimum number of teeth for pinion is 20

(iii)Find the pitch circle diameters of all gears and centre distances.

(iv) Sketch a line diagram showing the gear train.

PART C

8. In a reverted epicyclic gear train the arm A carries two gears S1 and S2 and compound
gear P1-P2. The gear S1 meshes with gear P1 and the gear S2 meshes with gear P2.The
numbers of teeth on gears S1, S2 and P2 are 80, 48 and 72 respectively. Find the speed and
direction of gear S2 when the gear S1 is fixed and arm A makes 400 rpm counter clockwise.
