ALLAHABAD IN 21ST CENTURY

Allahabad, also known as Prayag, is one of the 13 Smart Cities identified in UP out of 100 in
India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Allahabad District. It is one of the largest
commercial centres in Uttar Pradesh, having the second-highest per capita income and the
third-greatest GDP in the state.
As per 2011 census, Allahabad has a population of 1.17 million (including OG), spread
across an area of about 70sqkm.
Allahabad is one of the major pilgrim/ tourist destinations of the country, resulting in a large
floating population (over 100 million pilgrims Maha Kumbh Mela 2013).
It has well developed road and railway network connecting to almost all the major cities of
India.
There is an airport at Bamrauli which is about 10 kilometres from Allahabad. Presently,
limited flights are available from this airport.
Allahabad is the starting point of National Waterway No. 1 (NW-1), which is 1,620 km-long
between Allahabad and Haldia.
The major industries of Allahabad are tourism, fishing and agriculture
The pace of urbanization in Allahabad is comparatively low with 24%.
Allahabad city constitutes 20% of the districts population and 80% of the districts urban
population. Increase in population has been mainly because of migration.
As per Census of India, Allahabad has three regions, namely, the AMC, the city outer growth
(OT) and the Allahabad Cantonment (CB).
As per Census 2011, the total number of households in Allahabad city was 195,259 and the
average household size of Allahabad city was 5.69.
Allahabad has traditionally been well known for its educational institutions, the University,
High Court and centres of pilgrimage, intellectual and socio-political activity.
Allahabad becomes a premier educational centre with first along vernacular school
established in the year 1836.
The city today
The existing urban setting and growth trends of Allahabad can be classified into three main categories:
The Old City - Chowk, Ghantaghar, Bans Mandi, Katghar, Kotwali, Gaughat etc.
The New City (conceived during British rule and thereafter)
The out grown (OG) areas along the major corridors including Jhunsi, Naini, etc.
A major portion of Allahabad city is situated within the two rivers

IBM selected Allahabad among 16 other global cities for its smart cities programme to help it
address challenges like waste management, disaster management, water management and
citizen services. The company commenced working on solid waste management and power
sector in generating renewable energy. A 1.35 km long riverfront along Yamuna river would
be developed by the Allahabad Development Authority, irrigation and power departments at
a cost of 147.36 crore. Navyug Smart Mini City is one of the popular residential projects in
Allahabad worth Rs 600 crore.
The city has played an important part in the formation of Modern India.
