As pues,

Abstract. The silent era of Italian cinema saw a large number of epic films made
that recreated antiquity. Their unprecedented success won fame with audiences
across the world and placed Italy at the head of global cinematic production,
as well as constituting the first great collection of cinematic representations of
the ancient world. Reaching its peak with Cabirira (1914), this genre of Italian
epic silent film should be recognized for its quality, success and influence.
Furthermore, these productions not only marked a great advance for cinema in a
narrative sense, they also configured many prototypes of antiquity that have been
repeated since then by many historical productions of world cinema.

Abstract. This article proceeds from three initial observations: 1. the birth of
the present Greek state is a relatively recent phenomenon although it is often
situated in antiquity; 2. while Athenian democracy has generally been neglected
by cinema the militaristic Spartan oligarchy has received greater attention; 3.
little effort has been made by filmmakers to highlight the political and social
differences between these systems or to draw on either ancient sources or the
work of historians. This leads to a negative conclusion in the sense that reflecting
on the past and in this case Athenian democracy could lead, in spite of their
evident differences, to improvements in modern democracies. This has particular
relevance in the present moment, when the activity of finance capital and political
actors are reducing the capacity for action of states and their citizens at a time
when the richer are getting richer and there are ever greater numbers of people
living in poverty or in precarious situations.

Sus dos pelculas Our Last Spring

Abstract. This chapter analyses the way in which the dictatorship of Jorge
Rafael Videla in Argentina manipulated and used the World Cup in 1978 to
counteract the many accusations made against the regime from abroad. Through
La fiesta de todos (in which fragments of fiction and documentary footage are
intermingled) and Mundial 78. La Historia Paralela, the story of one of the most
tragic World Cups in the history of twentieth-century football is reconstructed.
In a celebratory tone, the fervent defence of the events organisation and the
insistence on using it as a symbol of national unity is counterpoised to the
climate of terror and death that defined Argentina during the Process of National
Reorganisation. Sport, repression, patriotism, manipulation and the violation of
human rights formed part of a World Cup that was utilised as an instrument of
propaganda by the regime and as a way of hushing up the loss of thousands of
lives.

Abstract. The film Dawn of America was released in 1951, the product of a
script written at the request of state authorities and which had received the
assistance of historical assessment and the patronage of traditionalist, Catholic
historiography. Our objective in analysing seven of the questions that the film
deals with is oriented, in the first place, towards demonstrating the dependence
of the script on the traditionalist historical interpretation; in the second place,
to contrasting the same with that effected by the historian Antonio Domnguez
Ortiz, who we have chosen as an exceptional observer, who studied the discovery
of America from the point of view of its repercussions in the peninsular world.

Abstract. The novel of Giorgio Bassani and the film by Vittorio de Sica allow
us to reflect on the relationship between cinema and memory. Notwithstanding
the awards it received, the cinematographic adaptation of Il Giardino dei Finzi-
Contini is unsatisfactory. The richness of Bassanis text, the Jewish memories
kept inside the walls of Ferrara, the old capital of the House of Este, is sacrificed
in order to establish a Visconti-esque mise-en-scne and a commercial ending.
Certainly the film contributed to the dissemination of knowledge about the
destruction of Italian Jewry during the Second World War, but it failed to
effectively portray the world of Bassani.

Abstract. Forty years have passed since the premiere of Rebellion in Patagonia,
a film based on the research of Osvaldo Bayer into the events that occurred in
the south of Argentina in the 1920s, and which was published in four volumes
under the title Los Vengadores de la Patagonia Trgica at the beginning of the
1970s. This article will provide an overview of the literary works that recorded
these tragic events, when strikes of rural labourers were brought to a close by
the massacre of 1500 workers at the hands of the Argentinian army, events which
were hushed up for almost fifty years by the Republic of Argentina, and will
also analyse the context of the film and the setbacks that beset its release in the
convulsive decade of the 1970s.

Abstract. The last film by the Argentinian director Leopoldo Torre Nilsson,
made during the dictatorship, captures the history of Argentina in the 1970s.
Banned by the regime, it provides a metaphor for a reality that left at least
thirty thousand victims dead (this is the number attested by the Investigative
Commission that published the report Nunca Mas, it is assumed that the number
was in fact larger. In the majority of cases, it is not known how these people died,
or what happened to their bodies). Neither public nor critical opinion understood
in 1976 why government censorship had prevented the films release. The arrival
of democracy and the Trial of the Juntas under the government of Ral Alfonsn
provided the sad explanation, clarifying to some extent the phenomenon of state
terrorism that had ravaged Latin America in that decade.

Portugal.
Abstract. Theatres are prominent icons in the brand image of cities. Their
frequent destruction and reconstruction is recorded by documentary cinema in
all of the different phases of this traumatic process. This text analyses how filmic
images can simultaneously bear historical witness to moments of catastrophe, to
the shock of communities, to the actions carried out by the administration of the
polis, to discussions regarding the need to provide continuity to the theatrical
institution and to the works of reconstruction. Furthermore it seeks to debate the
capacity of cinemas to keep this memory alive, to reinvent and interpret it in the
context of the communities to which they belong. Four emblematic case studies
are chosen for this analysis, in Spain, Italy and Portugal.

Abstract. In 2001, the film library of Munich finished restoring Helena, the forgotten
film by Manfred Noa, originally released in 1924 during the Weimar Republic. In the
early days of cinema, already accepted as the seventh art and a source of research, this
film recovers an idealized image of classical Greece that had as its origin an aesthetic
appreciation of Greek art as the embodiment of beauty that all art must seek to imitate.
Such was the perspective of J.J. Winckelmann, whose reflections on Greek art and,
later, its historicization, marked the beginning of neoclassicism as an aesthetic and
critical movement that would have enormous importance in the constitution of the idea
of Greece that Germany, and Europe as a whole, would set about constructing over
the course of the following two centuries. In this chapter, I will attempt to establish
up to what point and according to which parameters might Noas film represent one
of the culminations of this ideal, albeit that the moment chosen for its production, in
the midst of an economic, political and national-identity crisis, resulted in its relative
failure. Nevertheless, the films restoration, eighty years later, relying on different and
at times fragmentary copies, containing different edits, would appear to suggest an
allegory of the philological work of construction required by the Homeric poems,
which provide the plot-line of the film.

Abstract. The peculiar personal and political trajectory of the New Yorker Robert
Rossen provides the framework for a restless cinematic work through which his
complaints and self-justifications were transposed to the Sixth Century BC and
the figure of Alexander III of Macedon, who became the perfect avatar through
which to condemn and defend his denunciation of comrades before the House
of Un-American Activities. In the figure of Robert Rossen and in particular his
film Alexander the Great of 1956, ancient and modern history converge with the
personal story of this controversial US filmmaker.
