The objective of this course is for students to gain insight and understand
the fundamental concepts and principles of Fiber Optic Communication
Systems. The course will cover various building blocks and components of
Fiber optic communication system, architecture.

Advantage & Disadvantages of Optical Fibres


Advantage:
Broad bandwidth
Immunity to electromagnetic interference
Low attenuation loss over long distances
Electrical insulator
Disadvantage:
Small dimensions
- Splicing fibers together is difficult
- Coupling from lasers to fibers is difficult
Not always cost effective for short distances
