Writing Prompt #2

Growing up during middle school, there were high expectations of me to do well in

school. My mom knew the importance of doing well then so that my transition into high school

would go smoothly. Therefore, one of the things that she would always do was throw away any

of my papers that had sloppy hand writing. This process would make me so frustrated because no

matter how much work was on that sheet of paper, if it was sloppy hand writing, I would have to

rewrite everything. Although I have not yet come to appreciate her throwing away my work, I do

believe that is why my handwriting is much neater than what it would have been.

Additionally, one of my teachers in middle school had a direct impact on my thought

process about a simple question. When you are walking down the street, a common question

asked is, How are you doing? Most peoples go to response is, I am doing good. However,

that question is no longer that simple for me due to a long-winded lecture on the difference

between responding good and well. Although the word well is an adverb which modifies other

adverbs, verbs, and adjectives and the word good is an adjective which describes nouns, both

subsequent responses to the well renown question are technically grammatically correct.

However, my teachers preference was for the response to be, I am well. Ever since that day

whenever I hear that question my mind automatically goes back to that lecture taught by my

middle school teacher. Even though this lecture was one of many given by my teachers
throughout my middle and high school career, it has stuck with me to this day and has shaped my

literacy narrative in a unique way.
