Causes of Soil Erosion

I. PROBLEM: What are the causes of soil erosion?

II. MATERIALS:
2 medium size cups small basin
5 five peso coin newspaper
styrocup with 5 medium holes hand fan
water dry soil

III. PROCEDURES:
1. Fill in 2 medium size cup of dry soil.
2. Lay 2 pieces of illustration board on the table and place one 5 peso coin in each.
3. Mound the dry soil in each set-up. Label it as Set-up A and Set-up B.
4. Get a styrocup and punch 5 medium holes on its bottom.
5. Hold the styrocup with holes above the Set-up A and put water on it to represent
rain. Observe what will happen.
6. On Setup B, spread old newspaper beside the illustration board. Fan the mounded
soil using a hand fan. Observe what will happen.

Science 4

I. PROBLEM: What are the causes of soil erosion?

II. MATERIALS:
3 pans
water
soil
3 blocks of wood
III. PROCEDURES: dipper
1. Put equal amount of soil in 3 pans.
2. Lay the first one flat on the table. Label it Setup A.
3. Elevate one end of the second pan with a block of wood. Label it Setup B.
4. Elevate one end of the third pan thrice the height of the second pan.
Label it Setup C.
5. Pour equal amount of water in each pan slowly.
6. Observe what happens.

Pores in the Soil
I. PROBLEM: How do sand, clay and loam differ in porosity?

II. MATERIALS:
3 glass funnels timer 3 cups, each containing 50 mL water
3 graduated cylinders 3 cotton balls 1 cup of sand, clay and loam soil

III. PROCEDURES:
1. Prepare three (3) set-ups as shown below. Use cotton balls with the same thickness
for all the set-ups.
SET-UP

2. Pour the water in

each cup into the funnels.

3. Observe carefully how long it takes for the first drop of water to fall through the
sand. Do the same for the clay and the loam soil. Record your findings in the table.
4. Allow the water to drip continually into the graduated cylinders. When it stops to
drip, determine the volumes of water collected. Record the volumes in the table.
