Using the Accumulator Charging Kit
The Accumulator Charging Kit is used to check and, if necessary, adjust the
nitrogen precharge pressure of most piston and bladder type accumulators. The
procedures below are general procedures. If more detailed information is
required, refer to the Series 111 Accumulator product manual or the Procedure
for Checking Piston and Bladder Type Accumulator Precharge and Precharging
(MTS part number 408266-01).

Checking the 1. Turn off system electrical and hydraulic power. Ensure that system
precharge hydraulic pressure is at zero.
pressure
2. Close the bleed valve.

3. Turn the chuck valve fully counterclockwise.

4. Connect the chuck valve to the accumulator valve.

5. Open the accumulator valve (note the two types of accumulator valves on
the parts identification illustration).

6. Read the accumulator pressure on the appropriate pressure gage.

If pressure is other than the required level, proceed with Reducing

Precharge Pressure or Increasing Precharge Pressure as applicable.

If the pressure is at the required level, close the accumulator valve and
remove the chuck valve.

completely.

3. Close the accumulator valve and remove the chuck valve.

WARNING Use only dry nitrogen to charge accumulators.

Damage to equipment or injury to personnel can result from use of another

gas.

Use dry nitrogen to charge accumulators when you perform the following steps.

Increasing the 1. Close the accumulator valve.

precharge
pressure 2. Connect the nitrogen supply hose assembly.

3. Adjust the regulator output pressure to the required level.

4. Open the accumulator valve.

5. Slowly open the regulator shutoff.

6. Charge the accumulator to the required level.

7. Close the regulator shutoff valve.

8. Close the accumulator valve.

9. Open the bleed valve, then remove the chuck valve.

Pressure It is normal for a small amount of accumulator precharge loss to occur during
check operation. Because of this gradual reduction in precharge pressure, the pressure
intervals should be checked and recharged (if necessary) at regular intervals. The
precharge pressure checking intervals of your accumulators depends on how your
system is used. Vigorous use causes more rapid pressure loss and thus requires
checking and recharging more often.

Initially, check the accumulator precharge pressure every 2 weeks or 100

operating hours. If the precharge pressure changes more than 1.38 MPa
(200 psi) during this time period, recharge the accumulator and check the
pressure twice as often in the future. If the precharge pressure changes
less than 1.38 MPa (200 psi), check the pressure half as often.

When you have established a regular interval for checking the precharge
pressure, note the amount of pressure loss that occurs each time the pressure is
checked. An increase in pressure loss during the period between checks may
indicate that the accumulator seals require replacement.
