The Importance of
Power Quality and Low
Resistance Grounding
and Why we need to get
it right!

3
Think of grounding as
the foundation of a
house that holds all of
your electrical systems

5
Power Quality
Almost 75% of the power quality problems
inside a facility (home) relate to grounding.
Which makes it the single most important
factor (Ref:1)

Effective Grounding plays an important role

in the operations of sensitive electronic
equipment

same thing over and
over again and
expecting different
results

7
Resistance to ground
Today, the most common specification
where sensitive equipment is involved is for
the ground field (rods, grids, plates, etc.) to
be a maximum of 5 Ohms of resistance or
lower.

If sensitive equipment is to be installed it is

very important for the grounding system to
be compatible with the equipment
requirements. (Ref:5)

8
Thinking beyond the NEC
Engineers designing and specifying grounding
and bonding should not use the NEC as a
cookbook. The codes purpose is to ensure
safety and is a minimum standard. (Ref:2)

The electrical grounding system in most

facilities is the electrical service entrance
ground. In the past it was often OK to just
meet the minimum requirements of the National
Electrical Code (NEC). Today, the requirements
of the NEC should only be the starting point for
grounding systems and bonding.(Ref:5)

9
Grounding Electrodes
Three of the most popular grounding
electrodes are steel rebar, galvanized or
copper clad ground rods.

Several issues have became evident in all

Three of these popular grounding
electrodes.

10
Steel Rebar
Connecting a copper grounding electrode
conductor and steel raises the issue of
galvanic corrosion when dissimilar metals
are joined, electrolysis occurs.

Under the best conditions the joint between

two dissimilar materials will result in
corrosion and increased resistance over
time. (Ref:2)

11
Steel Rebar
Steel and Copper have very different energy
levels with steel being negative and anodic of
the two. Bonding the two together creates a
corrosion battery with a driving voltage of
approximately 0.5 VDC. Only the circuit
resistance is variable and controls the amount
of current/resulting metal loss. If the resistance
to earth of concrete incased electrodes is
sufficiently low to make bonding them an
improvement to the facility grounding, the
reader can be assured that ionic current will
flow from the steel anode to the copper cathode,
and the rebar will deteriorate. (Ref:4)

12
GALVANIZED GROUND
RODS
Galvanized rods have the same related issue
as rebar, the issue lies in that these rods are
installed outside where they are exposed to
the elements and more susceptible to
moisture and faster corrosion.

13
COPPER CLAD GROUND
RODS
One of the most common problems is a
loose fitting or connection.

As connections age, they loosen, corrode

and become subject to thermal stress that
can increase the impedance of the
equipment ground path or increase the
resistance of this connection to earth.
(Ref:3)

14
What Else?
After proper testing and acquiring a ground
resistance of 5 ohms or less.

The weakest link to the entire grounding

system becomes the connection point of the
grounding conductor and grounding
electrode.

Susceptible to disconnection and or

corrosion

15
Galvanic (Dissimilar) metal
Corrosion
Keep Moisture (Electrolyte)
away from the contact area
and limit the potential for
galvanic reaction between the
two metals. (Ref:7)
