Requirements of covered electrodes for metal arc welding of structural steel were covered in» | Part T and Part 11 of IS 814 for welding products other than shects and fur welding sheets + Tespctively, 1S 814 was first published in [957 and subsequently revised in 1963, 1967, 1970 and 1974,” In the fourth revision, 18 8i4, was split in two parts The classification and coding of the covered electendes was covered in 18 $15. 18 615 was first fcsued in 1956 and subsequently revised in 1966 and 1974. While revising these two standards the committee thought it appropriate to cover the elassifica- tion und coding along With the specified tequirements of electrodes by merging both the paris of IS 814 and IS 815. Important modifications affected in tiis revision are as under: 4) The classifiation system has been simplified to « code consisting of a alphabets to i cate the type of coating and four digits to indicate the basic properties of the electrode; bb ‘The tests for deep penetration electrodes have been eliminated as these were considered to be of Tittle significance: ©} In the butt weld assembly the transverse tensile anil charpy impact tests have been elimi= nated and only bend test has been specified. Provisions for thydrogen removal hent- teeatment’ for the bend specimen have also been included; 4) For the detetinination of the quantity of liffosible hydrogen a reference has been made to IS 11802 : 1986 “Methods for determination of diffusible hydrogen content of deposited weld metals from covered eleettodes in Welding mild and. low alloy. stecs’; 6) Use of non-rimming stecl for core wire has been permitted by giving refereace to the amended 1S 2879 : 1975 +Mild stect far metal arc welding electrode core wires (second revision Ys i 1) Assessment of all weld impact test hag been made on the lines af ANSI/AWSA 5.1-81, ‘Specification for covered carbon stect are welding electrodes"; and #8) Under the initial tests, radiographic test has been inclued. This country lard keeps in view the manufacturing and trade practices being followed in the this field. Assistance has also been derived from the following publications: 4) ISO 2560-1973, -Covered electrodes for manual metal are welding of mild stecl and low alley steel — Code of symbols for identification’ issued by the Iaternational Organization for Standardization (180). b) BS 639: 1986 “Specification for covered carbon and carbon manganese steel electrodes for manual metal are welding’ issued by British Standards Institution ¢ BSE ). ¢) ANSI/AWSA. $.1-1981 ‘Specification for covered carbon steel arc welding electrodes’ issued by American National Standards Institute (USA ).
