Sixth Grade Math Course Guidelines

2017-2018
Mrs. ODell

Welcome to Sixth Grade Math! My class encourages a love of math and fostering a positive attitude towards
learning. Students and parents are resources that contribute to the classroom. As a classroom teacher I am
dedicated to maintaining a safe and productive learning environment for all students.

Textbook: The textbook is available ONLINE/one will be sent home.

Needed Materials on a Daily Basis:

Agenda Book
24 #2 Pencils
4 Spiral notebooks (One notebook per quarter)
Loose leaf notebook paper
2 Folders
2 Plastic pencil sharpener (they break easily)
1 pack of dry erase markers
1 eraser for dry erase board
Headphones (air buds) for the computers

Wish List Items: (items that are wanted but not necessary)
High lighters
Index cards
Pink erasers
Zippered pencil case
Colored Pencils
Markers
Headphones (air buds) for the computers
Post it notes
Box of Kleenex

Homework: ALL MATH WORK MUST BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL!!! Math assignments are a time for
practice and a time for learning from mistakes. Count on having a math assignment every day, with time for
questions and discussions during the following classes. If you need more help on the homework, then please
have your parent indicate that on the homework assignment. I am available during lunch for Math help.

Make-up work: According to county policy, a student has one day for each day of absence to make up missing
assignments without penalty. If you have an unexcused absence, the assignments will be recorded as a zero. It is
the students responsibility to obtain, complete, and submit the missing assignments on time.

Late Work: Late work will be accepted ONE day late for partial credit.
Grading: Grades are based on a point system. Common assessment tests will be given to all classes to test for
mastery of material taught. Retakes of tests are available when a retake form is filled out and the remediation is
completed to the satisfaction of the teacher. This means that the student is required to study the material given
and parents must sign off that the student is ready to retake the test.

I-Ready: Students will need 45 minutes a week on the computer program called I-Ready. This program helps
students practice skills that may need reinforcement/ learn new skills. This will be a graded as minutes
completed.

Agenda Books:
Families: It is the responsibility of the student to record assignments in the agenda daily. Agenda books are
used as a hall pass and must be signed by a teacher or adult when you leave the classroom. Lost agenda books
must be replaced by the student.

Parents: There should never be a blank box where the math assignments are written. I will sign off daily on all
agenda books and require parents to sign the agenda books nightly. This is a great way to communicate about
any questions or concerns that you have as well.

Afterschool Programs/Tutoring: There are several tutoring programs in Sarasota available to students. I
encourage all students to attend one to help with math fluency and homework. Please contact me for more
information.

Classroom Expectations:

Follow the B5 rules of Booker Middle.

Please do not wear scented lotion, cologne, axe spray or perfume as there are students who
have allergies and asthma.

Conference Times and Contact Information:

Conferences are available between 12:20-1:10 or after school. I can be contacted at 574-876-8439 before or
after school or during my planning period time noted above. Email is typically the easiest way to communicate
and my email address is: Angela.ODell@sarasotacountyschools.net . If you have not heard from me within 48
hours, then please leave a phone message for me. My policy is to contact parents as soon as possible.
