When teaching sight words, I want them to be accessible to all learners. I have all the words we are
learning or have learned posted on the green pocket chart. As a new word is introduced we cheer
it or call out each letter as we do a motion with our bodies to lock it into our brains. We also play
a variety of games. The blue pocket chart is a game called Find Hedgie, where a small card with a
picture of a hedgehog is hidden behind the words. Students have to read the word to pick it to see if
thats where Hedgie is hiding. We also play mystery letter where I dictate letter by letter as the
students write it on the table until they call out the word. We also play with the crocodile, a game
where students reach into a crocodile mouth to pull out a word and a word cube where students
roll large foam dice with words on it. Finally, we play scrambled eggs where letter tiles are hidden in
an egg and students crack it open, unscramble and read the word. While not all of these will work for
all students, some will reach everyone.
