1. Censorship is at odds with a knowledge economy

Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself. Potter Stewart
The worst evil is - and that's the product of censorship - is the self-censorship, because that
twists spines, that destroys my character because I have to think something else and say
something else, I have to always control myself. Milos Forman
When you have strict censorship of the internet, young students cannot receive a full education.
Their view of the world is imbalanced. There can be no true discussion of the issues.
Ai Weiwei
Censorship ends in logical completeness when nobody is allowed to read any books except
the books that nobody reads. George Bernard Shaw
There is a fine line between censorship and good taste and moral responsibility.
Steven Spielberg

Approach:
This is a revelatory sentence and should be put in the context of the role that censorship plays in
governing people its positive and negative impact on society. One must grasp to understand
contemporary international and domestic politics as well as ancient civilizations and vice versa with
context of censorship.
Introduction:
Explain it as; a knowledge economy is based on dissemination and sharing of information followed
by discussions, discourses, examination, analysis and criticism. All innovations and discoveries depend
on freedom of thought and expression. Ideas cannot grow under fear or censorship. Compliance to
authoritarian laws and irrational or inhuman social or religious customs and traditions lead to slavery
and they act as a jamming mechanism throttling progress.
Put forth the societies have grown or receded in proportion of the amount of freedom and liberty they
granted. Those societies which remained stuck up in authoritarianism lost in the game of progress and
those who were ready and amenable to be free progressed. But the freedom and liberty should be
disciplined.
Main Body:
Censorship is the suppression of free speech, public communication or other information which may
be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by
governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.
Nations will always be tested with censorship, because some people believe that no one knows the
true meaning of right and wrong. For the people who love to pursue the impossible heights of going

above censorship, authority figures will always be a step ahead to make sure that innocence will
always be protected. As long as censorship is considered a valued part of life for those in control,
there will always be questionable doubt about the truth behind the censorship.
Hence, Censorship may not be considered safe in the eyes of the few people, but it is needed for the
building of the core values of people today to form an ethical society, and like any new policy, law,
or rule, there are elements in that which are not liked or respected.
Are there any valid grounds or justification for censorship? In what conditions censorship becomes
legitimate?
In a democratic set up, such freedoms are necessary and quite helpful for the proper functioning of
the democratic process. It has been rightly remarked by Justice Bhagawati in Maneka Gandhi v.
Union of India in the following words: Democracy is based essentially on free debate and open
discussion, for that it is the only corrective of Government action in a democratic set up. If democracy
means Government of the people, by the people, it is obvious that every citizen must be entitled to
participate in the democratic process and in order to enable him to intelligently exercise his right of
making choice, free and general discussion of public matters is absolutely essential.
However, censorship does protect the innocence of people in many situations when it compromises
their safety. Perhaps, the most famous censorship in ancient times is that of Socrates, sentenced to
drink poison in 399 BC for his corruption of youth and his acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities.
History has shown that even though the government was created to help people, their views of what
they called corrupt, was always put into question.
How censorship throttles knowledge economy? Knowledge economy used to generate tangible and
intangible values. Technology and in particular knowledge technology help to transform a part of
human knowledge to machines. This knowledge can be used by decision support systems in various
fields and generate economic values. Knowledge economy is also possible without technology.
Briefly discuss about how censorship affects in the individual or the societal point of view- as liberty,
fraternity and fundamental rights are curb in the preview of the censorship and on the society aspect
it have to face some challenges by use of media and networks. Sub- prime crisis, sovereign debt crisis
and crony capitalism need rules and regulations and up to that point dos and donts need to be put
in place. How freedom and liberty can be ensured. Is it limited to laissez faire or something more?
Why freedom and liberty promote a knowledge economy?
Conclusion:
Certainly freedom and liberty help growth of a knowledge economy contrary to censorship. But order
and discipline should be governed by well defined 'rules of the game.' Freedom should not mean free
for all or anarchy. Even though government continues to insist on the freedom of expression, there
is still a censor on how far the expression of one's views can be expressed. Whether it is music,
newspapers, or media, the government will always be in control of what is censored and in other hand
open and transparent in the context with right to information as well as public interest.
2. Feeding India: Turning from Food Waste to Food Security
There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form
of bread. Mahatma Gandhi
Take all you can eat, but eat all you take. Anonymous
The Goal of the Food security should be to create a Food security culture, not a food safety
program. Fran Yiannas
Love Food and Hate Waste. Anonymous

Food is as important as energy, as security, as the environment. Everything is linked together.
Louise Fresco
Without sound conservation and management measures, fisheries will quickly become
depleted and a basic component of global food security will be lost.
Sigma Gabriel

Approach:
Here the statement is suggestive of the context - "How to feed Indian population"? Thus the objective
is to elaborate and analyze the statement with some topical examples and further suggest ways to
achieve the food security.
Introduction:
Establish the statement by justifying that ensuring food security ought to be an issue of great
importance for a country like India where more than one-third of the population is estimated to be
absolutely poor and one-half of all children malnourished in one way or another.
Main Body:
Elaborate the statement and try to define the terms Food Wastage and Food security. Food security
is not just about availability of food. Food security is built on three pillars:
a) Food availability: sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis.
b) Food access: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet.
c) Food use: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate
water and sanitation.

Food wastage acts as one of the obstacle to food security. Food waste refers to the discard of edible
foods at the retail and consumer levels.
Analyze why Food security is a big issue and what's the current situation globally. Try to elaborate
on the international Goals -SDGs and Global Hunger Index.
Then explain the status of food crisis in India as mentioned in HUNGaMA report and what were
its key findings. What is the geographical and social distribution of hunger and malnutrition in India?
Further write about the provisions in constitution framework for food security such as Supporting
laws, National Food security Bill and policy initiatives by the Government. Analyze the different
Government Initiatives and programmes since independence like Food security in Development
Plans, Green Revolution, Mention TPDS and RPDS and Schemes like - Midday Meal Scheme,
Annapurna Scheme.
Then proceed further with issue of food wasted globally. Analyse the status of Food Wastage in India,
the gravity of the problem.
Link the socio-economic aspects of food wastage as food wastage due to lack of infrastructure (lack
of cold storages, poor transport system, etc); due to faulty agriculture pricing policies; due to fancy
ceremonies.
This food wastage also comes at a steep environmental price. Explain the concept of Food Waste and
Ecological footprint. Where and how food wastage occurs mostly and thinks about the Impact of
food wastage on greenhouse gas emission and climate. What is the impact of food wastage on land
use, biodiversity, water footprint and other economic impacts?
Hints: Essay Test - 4 [3]
Why government initiatives failed to check the menace of food wastage?
Suggest the measure on how can we use Food wastage as an efficient and quick way to attain Food
sufficiency. Mention the Global initiatives like YUNGA on how to control Food Wastage and improve
Food Security Globally and national and local initiatives to tackle the problem of Food wastage.
Measures like avoid throwing away good food and help preserve the environment and save money in
the process, weddings faulted for prodigious food waste, Food Waste-to-Energy Conversion, BUY
WHAT WE NEED and EAT WHAT WE BUY campaigns, Love Food Hate Waste campaigns etc.
Example -
"Take all you can eat, but eat all you take" initiative by TCS
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), often at the forefront when it comes to social initiatives, has been
putting up a message for their staff members in the food court. 'TAKE ALL YOU CAN EAT, BUT
EAT ALL YOU TAKE'. It is an attempt to end food wastage and will soon be undertaken at all TCS
offices across the country. Every day the food wasted is weighed in kilograms and an update is given
to the employees. They also compare the food wasted every week.

Conclusion:

Nation building demands nurturing of our human resource with food and nutrition and achieve good
healthy population that will enable India to create quality workforce. In this process, we must
acknowledge that Food security is at the base. India has many policies and programmes however, food
insecurity and malnutrition continue to be high.

The focus can now be shifted to more efficient eating habits and food culture besides better public
delivery systems. Appropriate institutions are needed for better awareness, people-centric programmes
and social protection schemes and self-help group approach for Love Food Hate waste culture to be
successful.
