Gardening apps are getting better all the time

By Dean Fosdick
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Gardening apps are getting better all the time, supplanti-

ng manuals and textbooks as the way people dig for infor-
mation. Many university Extension services are develop-
ing the digital aids to extend outreach to clients.
Extension apps provide reliable, research-based infor-
mation, said Christopher Enroth, an Extension educator
with the University of Illinois, who evaluates gardening
apps for their relevancy, customization and ease of use.
Ive examined a few apps developed by various companies
that are simply another gateway to their products.
Other various interest groups have apps that give all
natural advice that is based more on opinion or beliefs,
Enroth said. It always helps to have a critical eye.
The word app is short for application software
designed for use on smartphones, tablets and other mobile
devices.
Purdue University Extension specialists, for example,
have created a series of diagnostic apps for gardeners that
provide solutions to dozens of problems for hundreds of
plants. This low-cost Plant Doctor app suite focuses on
perennial and annual flowers, tomatoes, turf grass and trees.
Every year, homeowners invest millions of dollars in
their landscaping materials, and due to insect diseases and
sometimes a lack of experience, problems come up, said
Janna Beckerman, a Purdue Extension plant disease special-
ist and content specialist for the apps. This is an afford-
able way to fix those problems. You just pull it (mobile
device) out of your pocket and have answers right away.
A new app from Toca Boca called Toca Lab: Plants aims
to plant seeds of interest in gardening for children. It fea-
tures a digital botanical laboratory that helps kids discover PlantSnap is a recent entry in the expanding field of apps intended to identify unknown plants and flowers.
scores of plants with differing personalities. It also enables
them to create new species.
We wanted to create something that would be fun, said
Bjorn Jeffery, Toca Boca chief executive officer. We hope
that the mystery, science and humor in the app combine to
ignite kids joy of discovery and empower them to seek out
other resources to learn more about botany.
PlantSnap is a recent entry in the expanding field of apps
intended to identify unknown plants and flowers. (See also
Plantifier, NatureGate, Leafsnap, Like That Garden,
PlantNet, ID Weeds.) It instantly identifies plants and
weeds from a photo, and along the way is producing what its
creators claim is the worlds largest plant database.
It works well for gardeners and academics and anyone,
said Eric Ralls, chief executive officer of PlantSnap. We
want anyone on the planet to be able to recognize any plant
on the planet. So far, we have 315,000 in our database.

Other gardening-related apps worth considering (all those
listed below are free):
For landscaping: iScape, Rain Harvest.
For diagnosis: Garden Compass, Plant Health, My
Garden Answers.
For plant guides: GKH Gardening Companion,
GardenMinder, GrowIt!
For naturalists: Audubon Bird Guide app, Insect
Encyclopedia, Bee Smart Pollinator Gardener.

Dorm decor
gets serious
By Melissa Rayworth
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

When Young Huh left for college in the 1980s, she

brought one giant poster of The Cure, bedding from the
local bed-and-bath store and maybe some desk accessories.
Like so many Gen-Xers, her one creative touch was asking
a supermarket for leftover milk crates to use as book-
shelves.
Now an interior designer, she has helped her own children
decorate their dorm rooms, and shes amazed at the design
expectations among college students.
Its a level of decorating that did not even exist in my
world view when I was in school, Huh says.
Today, there are lots of products that cater entirely to the
college crowd, she says.
Interior designer Jon Call sees the same phenomenon:
While his main business is designing luxury homes in
Manhattan, he also gets asked to design college living
spaces.
This new generation has grown up under the influence of
Today, there are lots of products that cater entirely to the college crowd. home magazines, HGTV and the virtues of democratic
design. They understand the value of creating unique spaces
for themselves, he says. They want their dorm rooms not
only to function, but also to reflect who they are.
Weve asked Huh, Call and small-space design expert
Theodore Leaf, host of the Design Network series Living
Big in Under 1,000 Sq. Ft., for advice on infusing a col-
lege dorm room with style and personality, while keeping
budget and function in mind.
As with any design project, Huh recommends beginning
with an overall vision for the space. Is it all one color and
soothing? Is it ethnic eclectic? Are you going for pink
extravaganza? Clip some pictures or start a Pinterest page,
she says.
Then, choose a focal point for the room, something you
would like to see every day. It could be your bed with an
oversize art work or a fun suzani wall hanging over it, Huh
says. Having something over-scaled or very interesting to
look at distracts the eye and makes you forget the size of the
space.
If your focal point includes saturated, dramatic color, it
will also help disguise the fact that a room is small. This
could be a red bed in an otherwise neutral room, Call
explains. It allows the eye to focus on one thing and the
defining walls to disappear.
Call also suggests adding a beautiful headboard to the
existing bedframe, elevating the look of basic dorm furni-
ture.
Another trick: Keep your color scheme to just three col-
ors to help make a small space feel bigger, and focus on
fewer pieces of furniture at a larger scale, Call says.
Leaf says the few furniture pieces you bring should do dou-
ble-duty, such as a storage ottoman large enough to func-
tion as a mini coffee table or as seating.
Call agrees: Your end table may have a drawer that is out-
fitted with chargers and cords to make it an electronics sta-
tion. Your bed could have bolsters on it to convert it into a
daybed for additional seating.
