1.0 SCOPE

This specification establishes mandatory requirements governing the classification of

areas where flammable liquids, gases or vapors are handled, processed or stored and
covers the requirements for the design of electrical facilities in and near such areas.

2.0 CODES, REGULATIONS, STANDARDS

The requirements of the latest edition of the following codes, regulations and standards
shall be met or exceeded, except as superseded herein. In cases where more than one
code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most stringent shall be
followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and other specifications or
correspondence, the OWNER shall be consulted and a ruling, in writing, shall be
obtained before any work is started.

International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC)

- IEC 60079 Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres

Institute of Petroleum (IP)

- Part 15 of the Institute of Petroleum Model Code of Safe Practice (2 nd Edition,

August 2002)

Where supplemental information is required, the following codes and standards shall be
used.

American Petroleum Institute

API RP 500 Recommended practice for classification of locations for Electrical

Installation

National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA)

- NFPA Bulletin 496 Purged and Pressurized Enclosures for Electrical

Equipment

Codes, Regulations & Statutes of Authority having jurisdiction in location of installation

Some requirements in this specification may be modified by specific requirements in the

Purchase Specification. In case of conflict, the specific requirements supersede this
specification.

Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by OWNER. Such
written approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work which would
constitute such a deviation.

3.0 AREA CLASSIFICATIONS

3.1 Zone 0 Locations

Zone 0 locations are locations in which an explosive atmosphere is continuously

present, or present for long periods, irrespective of whether the plant is in operation or
not.

3.2 Zone I Locations

Zone I locations are locations in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in

normal operation

3.3 Zone 2 Locations

Zone 2 locations are locations in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in
normal operation and, if it occurs, will exist only for a short time.

3.4 Non-Hazardous Locations

By implication an area that is not classified Zone 0, 1 or 2 is deemed to be non-

hazardous or safe area with respect to the Code.

4.0 DRAWINGS

Area classification drawings must be prepared to show the following:

(a) The classification and extent of each area with all major structures and
equipment indicated.

(b) All equipment which is a source of hazardous gas or vapor identified by:

Equipment number
Flammable material(s) handled
Atmosphere group according to the IEC

5.0 TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION

5.1 The codes, as referred under Clause No. 2.0 above shall be used to determine minimum
requirement of area classification.

5.2 When designing area classification, consider the problem of transient vapors from
hazardous sources. Further area classification is required to cover these conditions.

5.3 Mixtures of gases of different groups may be involved, or sources of both heavier-than-
air and lighter-than-air gases may exist within an area. In classifying such areas, all of
the following apply:

(a) Upon release, gas mixtures are considered to separate immediately into their
separate gases. If the separate gases are of different groups, use electrical
equipment within each classified area suitable for all the groups involved.

(b) In mixtures of Group II B and II A gases per IEC, the Group II B gases are
disregarded if they constitute 30% or less by volume of the mixture.

(c) In areas which are adequately ventilated and have lighter-than-air vapors, the
hydrogen in a gas mixture is disregarded if it constitutes 30% or less by volume
of the gas mixture.

5.4 Special consideration shall be given to those areas where large volumes of hazardous
materials are being handled or high pressures are utilized.

5.5 Consideration shall be given to classification of areas around sampling points, relief
vents etc. Location of electrical equipments near sampling points and relief vents shall
be avoided.

6.0 PURGING/PRESSURIZING SYSTEMS

6.1 Purging/pressurizing systems permit the safe operation of electrical equipment under
conditions of hazard for which approved equipment may not be commercially available.

Purging/pressurizing systems, must be approved by the OWNER and are designed in

accordance with the relevant IEC.

6.2 Ventilating Air

Ventilating air for buildings or enclosures (whose area classification is improved by

means of artificial or pressure ventilation, ventilating or pressurizing air) is obtained from
a point at least 3 m above grade, 3 m away from the nearest Zone 1 area, and 3 m
above the roof of a building restricting free air movement. Particular attention must be
given to location relative to safety valves and other vents. If the classification
improvement is to "non-hazardous", the point at which air is obtained is to be in a non-
hazardous area; not above a lighter-than-air classified area. These systems must be
approved by the OWNER.

7.0 ELECTRICAL FITTINGS AND ACCESSORIES

Electrical equipment selection and installation for the classified area shall be in
accordance with IEC 60079 and BS 5345. The selection shall follow the table here
below.
