It is important to structure lessons that
encourage using the four parts of language:
written, oral, reading, listening; scaffolding is
the best way to ensure that you create best
practice approaches.
Not allowing students to express their culture
and language in the classroom can be the most
detrimental thing to do. It stops them from
contributing and sharing their true self.
Yes! Using L1 to aid understanding is very
important. Learning is best when the teacher
can speak the same L1, so if students have the
opportunity to converse to create
understanding, it is a productive way of
learning English.

Yes! ELL students do not need extra work to
create understanding and success. By working
the proper aspects into a lesson (scaffolding
resources, providing collabortation time, pre-
teaching, etc.) ELL students will have success
without having more work.
Pre-teaching is a large part of creating full
understanding and higher level thinking. If ELL
students know what the goal is and the steps
that they need to take to complete work, they
will experience success in the classroom.
Yes. Understanding the basics of language is
important. Again, as long as it is scaffolded and
taught in a meaningful manner, grammar and
phonics can improve understanding and
participation academically and socially.
