I. Introduction:

Scent has a lot to do with how people react towards people. Having that scent makes the

person more comfortable with. The problem is, in these perfumes they may have nice and

soothing scents but they can really have a bad effect in our environment and even to ourselves

because of the chemical used in making it. The researchers thought of a way in which they can

produce a soothing and great scent without harming the surroundings and community. The

researchers will test if the fruit extract of can be a better distributer rather than other essential

oil.
The study tries to help the environment by substituting the chemicals used in a perfume by

using calamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa) which is abundant in our country. The

calamansis native homeland is in Southeast Asia. The calamansi is easy to cultivate. The plant

grows well in cool and elevated areas and in sandy soils rich in organic matter. It can also

lessen the expenses of the people that will buy perfumes. Calamansi (Citrofortunella

microcarpa) has been proven to help alleviate depression and anxiety. It is also among the few

aromatics that not just masks bad smell, but completely neutralizes them, making the essential

oil a great additive to cleansing products. Inventing a perfume that has a citrus scent, cheap,

doesnt have a bad effect towards our environment and our health and is made from something

that is abundant in our country is very helpful.

This study wants to test the calamansi extract as an alternative material to substitute

expensive perfumes. This is because calamansi is abundant here in the Philippines. The process

of making the calamansi perfume has easier and cheaper steps than making those expensive

ones.

Other perfumes have bad effects caused by the chemicals. This is where the researchers

fund their foundation and possible soultion. The researchers thought of a way in which they

can produce a soothing and great scent without harming the surroundings and community and

without spending a lot of money. The researchers desire is to make a good-smelling perfume

which does not have a bad effect in our environment.

The benifit involves the environment, health of the people and the economy of the

Philippines. It will not use much harmful chemicals used in other perfumes. It has a natural

component. It will also expand the market for Filipino farmers because this will enhance their

rural economic development.

The purpose of the study is finding a better perfume, which is cheaper and does not harm

our environment. The experimental study will be conducted to certify if the fruit extract of the

calamansi, used in making perfume is better than others in terms of benifits and smell.

It would be a big constraint for the researchers to perform the study because of their lack of

facilities which is gravely required for the study. It would also be difficult for the researchers

to find the right equpments and materials necessary for the study. The study focuses on the

fragrance only of the perfume.

II. Procedures, Equipment, and Materials

Figure 1. Process on making Calamansi Perfume

Preparation of the materials and equipements The procedures will start with preparing of the

materials. The researchers will need a syringe, bowl, glass, clean bottle (to put on the finished

product), calamansi fruit, water, ethyl alcohol, and vodka.

Collection of calamansi The researchers will collect calamansi fruit. They may buy calamansi

fruit at 10 php per pack or if they have a calamansi tree, they may pick some calamansi fruits.

Extraction of calamansi fruit The researchers will have to extract the juice from the calamansi

fruit. Put it in a clean glass or bowl. The perfume will make use up to 70% to 80% of calamansi

fruit extract.

Adding the essential oil and vodka The researchers will have to buy or use (if they have a

stock) essential oil and vodka. The perfume will have atleast 15% to 30% of essential oil, and

5% to 10% of vodka.

Mixing all the elements The researchers will mix the extracted juice from the calamansi fruit,

the essential oil, and vodka. They will use a syringe and a mixer in mixing all these elements

to measure the amount of materials they are using.

Recording, Analysis and Interpretation of Data Gathered . The other questions like the money

spent, level of safety and contribution to the environment will be answered when the data

gathered from the experiment is recorded, analyzed and interpreted.

Preparing the finished product To make it look presentable, the researchers will put the

perfume in a clean bottle.

III. Results and Discussions:

Our data and results are based on our observations and how we experiment our product.

We conducted three trials. On our first and second trial we failed but we do not give up unless

we conducted another trial and it is successful. On our first trial we used tomato, calamansi,

sugar, salt, aloe vera and milk for our ingredients but the result of our product is, it becomes

degenerated. On our second trial, we used tomato, calamansi, steriaric acid, sugar, salt, egg

whites and ethyl alcohol but like our first trial it is failed. On our third trial on which we

produced successfully our product, we used tomato, calamansi, sugar, salt, egg whites, alcohol,

steriaric acid, water, vanilla extract and last, we used tea. We can say that we succeed to the

third trial because as we tried the facial scrub we can feel the softening of our skin face. Unlike

the other two first trials the third trial are not degenerated maybe because of the tea or the

triethanol amine that we put that serves as the emulsifier of our facial scrub.

The result of our experimentation and observation are successful because we produced

facial scrub out of tomato fruit without using too much chemicals, time and money.

We based our analysis of data and results to the ingredients that we used in conducting

our science investigatory project. We chose Tomato as our main ingredient because we can

observe to the tomato the different qualities that can help our facial scrub more possible. The

tomato is good for our health as well as good for the skin. In the study about tomato, tomatoes

are widely known for their outstanding antioxidant content, including, of course, their

oftentimes-rich concentration of lycopene. Researchers have recently found an important

connection between lycopene, its antioxidant properties, and bone health. In this information,

we can say that tomato is very effective in conducting a research. Aside from the tomato we

used calamansi as one of our ingredients in our product because we know that calamansi is

very good in our skin that can make it more softener. We used tea as the emulsifier of our facial

scrub because we know that Tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant. In a freshly picked

tea leaf, catechins can compose up to 30% of the dry weight. Catechins are highest in
concentration in white and green teas, while black tea has substantially fewer due to its

oxidative preparation.

In our ingredients used, we think wise so that our product will not get failed because of

the ingredients. We take a research to the different ingredients that we can used to surely proof

that it is useful and have the qualities we are searching for as our ingredients in facial scrub.

IV. Conclusions and Recommendations:

A. Conclusions:

From the data gathered and studied we have undergo, we made our conclusions for our

science investigatory project about the possibility of making facial scrub out of tomato fruit.

We therefore conclude that it is not easy as others think on how to make a science

investigatory project, since it was the first time we encounter this kind of research. Every

researchers/students undergoing an SIP should have self-determination while doing this. We

should be more curious and have perseverance to our SIP and act like a true researchers.

Because it is not as easy as we think, we should be patient and knowledgeable to the data and

information.
We therefore also conclude that our facial scrub cannot be perfectly made if there are

not enough ingredients. It takes a long time research to formulate your own ingredients and to

know the different chemicals that have advantages and disadvantages.

As a wholesome, we therefore conclude that using tomato fruit, we can produce a

product that can help us to have a better skin on our face, facial scrub. It is possible to produce

facial scrub out of tomato fruit without using too much money and time.

B. Recommendations:

In our SIP, we can see here the different aspects that we need to be considered in using

our product. We should use it according to the instructions that weve given. We should have

limitation in using this product because if we use it too much, it may cause bad effect in our

skin. But it help us to have a good and nice skin. Everybody knows that every time we used

any kind of facial scrub, we need to be sure that we rinse it properly. Avoid too much of using

it. In using this kind of product, we must determine the different bad and good effects of the

product. First, we should study the instructions. Second, follow it properly. And last, have a

limitation in using this product.
